Multiple instances of IE spawning!!!

Can anyone tell me what causes multiple instances of IE7 to load? It seems
to happen when I load a link into a new tab. Is there a fix?

Remove the malware from your computer.

Windows version? What anti-virus application or security suite is
installed? What anti-spyware applications (other than Defender)? What
third-party firewall (if any)?

Shucks, I'm sorry. I should have known better!!

I use Vista Home Edition. Brand new computer (notebook if that helps).
There's Norton on here and no other 3rd party firewalls or antispyware stuff
installed.

Re: Multiple instances of IE spawning!!!

I don't have any on here. (That I know of... Norton hasn't detected any and
it's a problem that came with a brand new computer.)

Assuming by "multiple instances" you mean more than one iexplore.exe task,
(e.g. not just multiple windows for one task) it depends on how you are launching them.
I get new tasks whenever I launch from the Start menu (in XPsp2) for example.

RE: Multiple instances of IE spawning!!!

Clicking a linkI am having perhaps a similar problem.

It seems perhap that it has to do with a multiple home page support
"feature"? I open IE and get one instance with my homepage displayed. If I
type microsoft.com in the address box, I get a new instance (new window). If
I type google.com in the address box of the 2nd instance, I get the desired
behavior, a new tab in that process displaying google.com. If I go back to
the original instance with the home page displayed and type google.com in
the address box, I get a another Google.com tab in the 2nd instance (3 tabs
open there now). Clicking a link on my homepage will open in a new tab in
that instance. Clicking any entry in "Favorites" opens in a new tab in the
other (2nd) instance. So it looks like no new tabs will open in the
instance that is displaying my home page except links from the home page.
Is that a feature or a bug?

Running Vista Ultimate w/"Norton Protection Center".

Re: Multiple instances of IE spawning!!!

See Don's reply. Otherwise...

Unexplained computer behavior may be caused by deceptive software
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/827315

Run a /thorough/ check for hijackware, including posting your hijackthis log
to an appropriate forum.

When all else fails, HijackThis v2.0.2
(http://aumha.org/downloads/hijackthis.exe) is the preferred tool to use.
It will help you to both identify and remove any hijackware/spyware with
assistance from an expert. **Post your log to
http://forums.spybot******/forumdisplay.php?f=22,
http://castlecops.com/forum67.html,
http://forums.subratam.org/index.php?showforum=7,
http://aumha.net/viewforum.php?f=30, or other appropriate forums for review
by an expert in such matters, not here.**

If the procedures look too complex - and there is no shame in admitting this
isn't your cup of tea - take the machine to a local, reputable and
independent (i.e., not BigBoxStoreUSA) computer repair shop.
