Why Does IE Freeze and Not Open?

I keep having to reinstall IE once every week or so. It'll work fine for a
while, but then it starts freezing. I open it. A window opens, but it stays
blank...for a long time. It never goes to my home pages, and it never even
says the name of any of them (there are 4).

Any suggestions? I keep having to use Firefox, and many of the sites I use
aren't fully compatible with it.

Re: Why Does IE Freeze and Not Open?

=> Does this behavior persist if you start IE7 in No Add-ons mode? To start
IE7 in No Add-ons mode:

1. Right-click on the blue IE desktop icon and select Start without Add-ons;
or

2. Start > (All) Programs > Accessories > System Tools > Internet Explorer
(No add-ons).

Troubleshooting and Internet Explorer’s (No Add-ons) Mode:

=> Does the problem persist if you Reset IE7 Advanced settings (RIES)?

Re: Why Does IE Freeze and Not Open?

Cool. Bi-passing the add-ons worked. First home page is an error message
saying that IE "is currently running without add-ons." But, I don't really
care.

Am I loosing something without doing the add-ons? I think these problems
start happening AFTER EVERY AUTOMATIC WINDOWS UPDATE.

How should I proceed?

Re: Why Does IE Freeze and Not Open?

Automatic/Windows Updates is not causing this behavior.

Uninstall any/all third-party toolbars via Add/Remove Programs, reboot, open
IE7 as you normally would and see if the behavior persists.

What anti-virus application or security suite is installed? What
anti-spyware applications (other than Defender)? What third-party firewall
(if any)?

Re: Why Does IE Freeze and Not Open?

We use Trend Micro's PCCillin...for security, antivirus, and firewall. I also
use spybot. I use Google Desktop, but I don't know of any other toolbars or
add ons. I will try out what you said below, and will reply afterward.
Thanks!

Do a thorough check for malware, following all of the steps at one of these
Web pages.
Help with malware:
All MS-MVP Sites.

Unexplained computer behavior may be caused by deceptive software.
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/827315

So How Did I Get Infected Anyway?
For quite a few people it's by installing programs like Messenger Plus,
whose ads for malware don't identify the malware as such and try to convince
you that you owe it to the author. See also:
http://www.wilderssecurity.com/showthread.php?t=27971
Don't ever do a "default" install of anything. Always choose Custom and see
what else is being carried along. Don't install any extras you're not sure
of.

State your Window version in your next reply, too, please.
