windows explorer going round in circles

when starting explorer, saying finding a solution then restarting. keeps
doing the same sequence. all sortcuts disapear then reapear. i can connect to
internet but the message still apears

its saying windows explorer has stopped working, windows is checking for a
solution to the problem. then windows exploerer is restarting. ive not
upgraded to windows vista. but ive got a virus plus shortcut on my desktop
which i deleted but still sends me warnings about infections. norton working
alright and not showing any fault. cheers
