Windows Explorer multiple select not work

non of the multiple mark methods work for me in in the right hand side of the
Window Explorer: clicking item A and then holding [shift] or [control] key
and clicking item B ends up in a situation where only item B is selected.
Menu Item Select All (have got a german desktop - not sure wether my
translation is correct) - is grayed out.

Any ideas?
