Internet Explorer can't open HTTPS (SSL) site

Hi,

I've trouble opening the following url:

https://syntaxcorrect.nl

I get the following error:

Internet Explorer cannot display the webpage

Most likely causes:
* You are not connected to the Internet
* The website is encountering problems
* There might be a typing error in the address

I've restored all security settings to defaults and tried Internet
Explorer from different computers all with the same result.

The SSL website works in:
- Mozilla Firefox
- Safari
- Internet Explorer 6
- Links
- curl
- wget

What could be wrong?

Thanks in advance,
****

This problem might be related to your security settings. However, I
suspect the site is using an invalid or fraudulent security certificate.

When I tried to open the URL using IE7 with Win XP (SP2), I received the
following error message.

"Certificate error - navigation blocked.
There is a problem with this website's security certificate.
The security certificate presented by this website was not issued
by a trusted certificate authority.
Security certificate problems may indicate an attempt to fool you
or intercept any data you send to the server."

With Firefox and with Netscape, I received a very similar error message.
When I tried to examine the security certificate using Firefox, most of
the essential information was missing.

The certificate is signed by an (for you) unknown certificate
authority.

Okay that's weird, could you please give me your precise Internet
Explorer version?
I have 7.0.5730.11 which doesn't work (gives me the cannot connect)

Yes, that message is okay for me. An "cannot display the website"
isn't okay.

Anyway thank you very much for your reply!

My versions are:

IE7 7.0.5730.11 (en-GB version)
Firefox 2.0.0.6
Netscape 8.1.3 (en-US version - based upon Firefox)

I have tried overriding the security warning in IE7 - which produces the
"cannot display the website" warning.

Overriding the security warning in Firefox does open a page at
https://syntaxcorrect.nl/ headed Syntax Correct. In Firefox, the page
produces a text message "This page is empty".

This suggests that the problem is with the website - and not with your
browser.

If you cannot resolve the problem, you could visit the URL at
http://syntaxcorrect.nl/index.php?op...&id=1&Itemid=1 .
Then click on the email link and use the webform at
http://syntaxcorrect.nl/index2.php?o...&id=1&itemid=1
to report the problems to the webmaster.

The site definitely has a self-signed certificate on it. That means
that they signed their own certificate rather than getting it signed
by a certificate authority. You can still access the site securely by
accepting the certificate but a certificate from a certificate
authority will need to be purchased and installed to get rid of the
error for everyone else.

Re: Internet Explorer can't open HTTPS (SSL) site

Hello I have the same problem. In my case we use a Self Generated Cert for a
stage environmnet and a purchased cert for a prod environment. I can provide
URLs to someone with a MSFT address but I am reluctant to post in a newsgroup
becuase the site is not live. The prod (purchased cert) works fine. The
stage (self generated cert) does not work.

When navigating to the page with version IE 7.0 (IE 7.0 7.0.5730.13) the
following is displayed "Internet Explorer cannot display the webpage".
Firefox and my home version of IE (IE 7.0 7.0.5730.11) displays "There is a
problem with this website's security certificate." and then gives me an
option to continue to the website. The later is the functionality I expect.

I have tried multiple security settings including the selection of SSL2 and
adding the page to my local intranet zone. I have also attempted exporting
the cert from home computer (.11 version) and then importing into my work
computer (.13 version). This did work either.

How do I enable the ability "to continue to the website." using a self
signed cert in IE 7.0 version (IE 7.0 7.0.5730.13)?

Re: Internet Explorer can't open HTTPS (SSL) site

From other posts I've tried the following.

1. Reboot in save mode. No change.
2. Turn off windows firewall. No change.
3. Downloaded "User Agent String Utility version 2" changed string to IE 6
string. No Change.
4. Downloaded "Microsoft Application Compatibility Toolkit 5.0" ran from
client. No error reported. Confirmed by accessing digest secured website
without credentials. No change.

What next?

Re: Internet Explorer can't open HTTPS (SSL) site

The cert is a 1024 self signed cert.

THIS DID NOT WORK. Exporting and then importing the cert DID NOT work.

Additionally I have cleared cached and reset IE 7.0 settings using the
"Reset Settings" button between changes. Additionally I have rebooted twice
trying to fix this problem.

Firefox 2.0 good
IE 7.0.5730.11 good
IE 7.0.5730.13 BAD

To keep track of things, it helps immensely if you include all of previous
message(s) in your replies to the newsgroup. Thank you.
