Re: Firefox won't open, and other internet issues

Cambion, try booting in safe mode and trying Bakuryu's suggestion with the registry editor. While in safe mode, log in to the Administrator account and follow the steps that Bakuryu said before. Then reboot normally and see if it was changed back.

Re: Firefox won't open, and other internet issues

XP SP3 is the Windows XP Service Pack 3.
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/d...displaylang=en

Since the values don't stay constant, after you chnage the value to 1, right click on DomainProfile click 'Permissions" and for all users (including SYSTEM and TrustedInstaller (if present)) uncheck the tick mark under Full Control -> Allow and make all permissions checked under "allow" to "Read" only.

Do the same for StandardProfile also. The values should not chnage after that.

it seems you have some serious infections. run some online scans :

Re: Firefox won't open, and other internet issues

I'm finally back on a normal connection, so hopefully scanning for infections and getting needed software will be a little easier.

Bakuryu,
I attempted what you tried, but some of the actions could not be "un-allowed" - the tick marks were faded and not letting me uncheck them. Also, the 'special permissions' for every group in both domains were all denied. Here is what each group/user name under each of the domains said:

DomainProfile:
Adminitrators: Full control and read-only are allowed and unchangeable.
Creator Owner: Special permissions are allowed.
Power Users: Read is allowed, but unchangeable.
System: Full control and read are allowed, but are unchangeable.
MyUserName: Special permissions allowed.
Users: Read is allowed, but is unchangeable.

StandardProfile:
Administrators: Same as DomainProfile
Creator Owner: Same as DomainProfile
Power Users: Full control and read are allowed
System: Same as DomainProfile
MyUserName: Full control, read and special permissions are allowed.
Users: Full control and read are allowed

I changed what I could that you advised me to change, and the values remain at zero.

I can't deny the presence of infections on my computer, though. I used the free Trojan scanner you suggested and it found 120 infections (most of them being tracing Cookies, which eludes me since I regularly clear my Cookies files). This irks me because my AdAware scans and allegedly has removed these tracing infections, and Windows OneCare didn't even find them. None of them are of ground-shattering severity, but geez - how do two scanners miss all of these? Anyway, I deleted them all via the scan site, but I still have all the problems I had before.

The ESET, Housecall/TrendMirco, and Kaspersky scanners did not load for me - they both redirected me to a Google search results page linking me to everything dealing with the aforementioned programs. The BitDefender scanner "could not check for viruses".

I did boot in Safe Mode and try to change everything, but nothing remained in its changed state. I'm getting ready to pit my laptop against gravity and see how well it can fly down the stairs. I have fixed all my ailing video game consoles with this method, so maybe it will work for my computer too

Re: Firefox won't open, and other internet issues

You then need to first take ownership of the items before you are allowed to make changes. Either log in with a admin privileged account or if your account has Admin privileges, after opening the Permission Window, click the "Advanced" button at the bottom, click the Owner tab, select your username and click OK. Now close all windows and re-open the Permission window, now you should be able to make changes. You just have to check under the "Deny" coloumn.

Which version of Internet Explorer are you using ? You have to allow the sites to install an ActiveX component that will enable the scan.

Also did you install Service Pack 3 for XP ? And post a HijackThis log file. And install Spybot S&D and enable the Internet Explorer resident protection. Also do a scan with Spybot S&D.

Re: Firefox won't open, and other internet issues

My Internet Exlorer is version 6, and I did allow ActiveX to be installed (this was required for the Trojan scan and that worked perfectly fine). I have no idea why the other ones did not work. I have not yet installed Service Pack 3, but I will (sorry fi that got mentioned before and I lot sight of it). I have downloaded SpyBot, but my computer is not allowing me to install it. I get the prompt asking if I want to "Run" or "Cancel", and clicking "Run" closes the window and nothing further happens.

I changed the settings in the Advanced tab under "Permissions", but I am still denied the ability to change a lot of the permissions. And all the ones I changed yesterday have gone back to what they were prior to said change.

Re: Firefox won't open, and other internet issues

From your last HijackThis log file, you do have a lot of antivirus and anti-malwares installed. Did you un-install some of them ?

And when you run a scan with Antivirus, scan your entire hard disk and not the Windows partitions only.

Re: Firefox won't open, and other internet issues

Yes, I did uninstall most of them. Right now, I only have AdAware, Windows OneCare and HiJackThis on here. I am thinking of getting rid of OneCare because it never finds anything when it scans my system.

I just performed another AdAware scan and saved a new HiJackThis log file, and this is what I got:

I ran these results by an online log file analyzer and none of them seem to be horrific. I was advised to remove a file called "aolsoftware", which came along with AIM 6, but I am not being allowed to delete the file. I get an error mesage saying that "acces is denied".

The AIM Search and the 'filter hijack' files cannot be deleted, for some reason.

Can you manually delete the files ?
try KillBox if you cannot delete the files or use Unlocker to close all open threads and then delete the file.
