How to convert a wifi connected laptop into a wifi hotspot

My query is just what the subject says. I have a laptop (OS: MS Windows Vista) on which I access internet through a wifi connection. I also access internet through my mobile phone, using the same network connection. But the signal strength is so low in my room that often my phone is unable to detect the signal. However, my laptop works perfectly fine. The reason may the signal receiver of my phone is very weak compared to that of my laptop.

I want to know is there a way so that I can access internet on my phone by connecting it to my laptop? Can I convert my wifi connected laptop into a wifi hotspot to extend the range of my wireless router?

I think the application - Connectify can do that but the software works only on Windows 7 OS only. Is there any way or application to do the same on Vista?

P.S.: I tried creating a ad-hoc network and enabling "allow other network users to connect through this computer's Internet connection" but this approach is not working. I guess this can be done if I have to share a "wired broadband connection" to other devices through wifi.

Guys.. please help me out!!! Is there any solution other than changing the position of the wireless router and install it somewhere near??

Surely your router has a LAN port on it, in which case you can run a cable from it to your laptop and then your ad-hoc network should work.

Re: How to convert a wifi connected laptop into a wifi hotspot

yeah that is one solution but then the whole purpose of my using the laptop fails when i have to work at one place, attached to the modem through a LAN cable!

i was looking for a way where in my wifi-connected laptop becomes a wifi hotspot!! not a LAN-connected! Moreover, this way i can also extend the range of my router. Where my router stops sending signals, the laptop starts..

it's possible with some paid software and a SECOND wireless network card/usb.
but it makes more sense (amount of work, time consumed, reliability of signal) to just buy a wireless access point.

Or you could run several cables from your router to optimum points around your house-that's what I do, cos wireless is always more of a hassle.

Re: How to convert a wifi connected laptop into a wifi hotspot

for Windows 7 based systems, "Connectify" is one software.. which is free of cost too!! I was wondering does any similar application exist for Vista-based/XP-based systems?? Probably no! So i guess the only option I am left with is that I upgrade my OS!! That would be most economical in long run..
