Mandriva 2008 not handle Vista hard drive format

Hi,

I tried maybe beta 2 and yesterday the new -rc1 minicd
of mandriva 2008 and diskdrake on neither can resize my
harddrive so I can create a partition to install linux on it.
It goes thru like 99% and says something like 1 cluster has
a problem and says it failed. The minicd might have said to
run chkdsk /f TWICE

Is this a known problem and will it be fixed before 2008
comes out?

I have a new HP Pavilion dv6000 laptop that I want to
put Mandriva on and I cannot. I need the bcm4321 wireless
N network support which I think 2008 will have but will
be stopped by not being able to repartition windows Vista.

Thanks,
Stan

Reboot into windows and let it run chkdsk.

I got this when I tried to make the windows directory too small. It stated
that I could shrink the windows partition by a certain amount, but it only
worked when I made the windows partition much larger than the minimum (like
almost double).

This was in 2007.1

Actually vista itself can repartition the drive. There is a new option
in Vista to resize the partition.
This is under something like Manage hard drives.

It was not trivial to find.

OK, I do not know if any confusing partitions have already been created but
I think you should resize your partitions in Windows, leaving empty space
on your disk. I don't know how to do this in Vista, but if Vista can't do
it, a Windows disk utility such as PQMagic should work.

Then try to install Manrdiva once again, creating new partitions on the
empty space for Mandriva. When the install is nearly complete, let Mandriva
set up Lilo to handle your boot-manager so you can use both operating
systems.

Also, Unruh said to leave a lot of extra space for Vista. In the past, this
is good advice with Windows.

Re: Mandriva 2008 not handle Vista hard drive format

Hi,

Thanks guys. I found something in windows Vista that does
let me shrink and expand hard disk volumes. In help if you
look for "Can I repartition my hard disk?"
then click on click to open 'Computer Management'

I resized windows down to what it suggested and that worked.
It was not as small as half the drive (ie windows takes
more than 1/2 of 160gb), but it worked and I was able
to install Mandriva. I let it put the boot loader in the
first option (first of boot record I think) and it will
dual boot to vista and mandriva.
