CRM 4 Installation Error - A referral was returned from the server
Has anyone seen the following error during a new installation:
13:33:45| Info| Executing Install action: Microsoft.Crm.Setup.Server.ProvisionBusinessAction 13:33:50| Error| Install exception.System.Exception: Action Microsoft.Crm.Setup.Server.ProvisionBusinessAction failed. ---> System.Runtime.InteropServices.COMException (0x8007202B): A referral was returned from the server. This is a pretty vanilla install: - Single box deployment, on premises configuration - Win2003 R2 x64 - Installing user is a member of domain admins group - All green checkmarks from the pre-installation diagnostic I've installed the CRM many times now in various environments, and the only thing that seemed out-of-the-ordinary was the very first screen of the installer, where it asks if you want to check for updates before beginning. I know there are no updates yet, but I always click Yes regardless. In this environment, it told me it could not check for updates, even though an internet connection is available. Not sure if that will give somebody an 'ah-ha' moment or not, but thought it might be noteworthy. Any thoughts appreciated. Thanks, Dave Ireland |

Hi Dave Thanks for posting in. This is Ken in Online Partner Support. Please check if your DNS holds old information about domain controller which is not available. Re: CRM 4 Installation Error - A referral was returned from the server
Hi Dave
Please check the records on DNS server using DNS snap-ins. You are able to find DNS snap-ins at [Start] - [Administrative Tools] - [DNS] Or just try to re-install DNS on the Active Directory Server. Please be adviced that you should back up Active Directory data befor these operations. Re: CRM 4 Installation Error - A referral was returned from the server
I'm still experiencing the 'referral' error - anyone else have any ideas?
DNS has been cleaned up as far as I can tell. Re: CRM 4 Installation Error - A referral was returned from the server
Hi Dave Thanks for the update. I understand that you still have the issue after clearning the DNS records. Then would you please uninstall and reinstall the DNS service and reboot the server after installation? And please clear Server local DNS cache with 'ipconfig /flushdns' just in case. Please backup your AD before the operations. Re: CRM 4 Installation Error - A referral was returned from the server
Ken, I'm afraid reinstalling DNS is not an option so a customer can install
the CRM. Re: CRM 4 Installation Error - A referral was returned from the server
Hi Dave Thanks for the reply. Unfortunately, due to the complexity of this issue we are unable to effectively assist with this request in the newsgroups. What I was able to find by the error message was the DNS issue. If the DNS does not hold old records anymore, then we need to research more deeply. I would like to suggest that you contact Microsoft Customer Service and Support services via telephone so that a dedicated Support Professional can assist with this request. Please be advised that contacting phone support will be a charged call. However, if you are simply requesting a hotfix be sent to you and no other support then charges are usually refunded or waived. To obtain the phone numbers for specific technology request please take a look at the web site listed below. If you are outside the US please see for regional support phone numbers. Thank you for your patience and understanding.
