Installing from the download

I purchased Expression Web as a download a couple of weeks ago and that went
fine. Yesterday I upgraded to Studio and downloaded, but I am unable to
install any of the components (Media, Blend, Design). I get to the
installation screen, and choose a component to install. But I eventually get
to a point where I get an error message that states something to the effect
r=that the *.en.msi file is unavailable. The files are there, so I am not
sure what the problem is. Any ideas?

I'm trying to locate and get our Design support engineer in here to help you
with this problem. Hopefully it won't be much longer before he pops in here.

RE: Installing from the download

Hello Ed,

Since this was a download both times you could see this error if the
original install location has been moved or is not available. For example,
if you downloaded the setup files to a mapped drive and that drive is no
longer mapped, or an external drive that is plugged, then the .MSI file
that setup needs would be seen as missing and the installer would complain
about it.

If neither of those are the case then lets start by trying to uninstall
Expression Web since you had it installed on the machine already. Do you
get the same error when trying to uninstall Web?

RE: Installing from the download

Hello Will,

Thanks for your recommendation. I uninstalled the old copy of Web,
re-downloaded the Studio suite, and installed the programs. Most everything
went well, with a couple of open issues:

1.) When I attempt to open (from the "Help" button in Media) either the
"Enter Product Key", or the "Welcome Screen", or the "About Expression Media"
windows, the window that opens is smaller than it should be. I am unable to
see the whole window, and I am unable to enter the product key.

2.) When I attempt to install the Media Encoder, I am directed to the site
that asks me to either purchase Decoder or download a trisl version. I
thought that this was included with the package. Please advise.

Thanks once again for you help with this.

RE: Installing from the download

If this is version one, then Encoder isn't included. The link you click
would have you download the trial version or it tells you to buy Windows
Media Encoder. Expression 2 does contain Encoder and there is a beta trial
download of Expression Encoder, different from Windows Media Encoder (WME)
in that Expression Encoder is an upgrade of the WME.

Now the FAQ for Expression Encoder on the Microsoft Expression website
(http://www.microsoft.com/expression) does say that in version 1, Encoder
shipped with Expression Media, but I believe that FAQ is wrong as the
documentation for Media and the installs on my machine have shown no
evidence of Expression Encoder installed with it. I'll contact someone to
get that FAQ changed.

As for the window to enter the product key, that's an interesting problem.
Is your screen resolution set to 800 x 600 by chance? Can you try setting
your screen resolution higher to 1024 x 768 or higher - that way the
product key window might appear.

RE: Installing from the download

Hello Will,

The last time I replied, I noted that my monitor was set as you suggested. i
did not explain that I was still having the problem, however. I worked around
it, guessing at the correcr keystroks to get registered, but the window is
still not correct. I don't know if this will rear it's head in some other
fashion down theroad, so i would like to get it fixed if you have any ideas.

By the way, if I am using Explorer and try to reply, I cannot. I have to use
Firefox to get to a reply window. Pretty strange considering this is a
Microsoft site. Any ideas on where to go for this issue?

Thanks,
Ed
