EW Crashing ?
This note is more by way of an FYI for some possible help for those that
have problems with EW intermittently crashing. I am not a frequent frequenter of this newsgroup so I am not sure if "EW's intermittent crashing" continues to be an issue for some. I do know that I have seen references to this in past posts and I only offer discoveries and solutions based on my own limited usage of EW. Background: By default, I use Microsoft Office Picture Manager for my default .jpg file association. This, for a host of "time", "performance" and "feature" issues. In other words, when I double click a jpg file - it opens with MS Picture Manager! Technique: When manipulating, editing, replacing and generally working with image files in EW I like to "double click" a .jpg image file in order to bring up the entire website's folder in MS Office Picture Manager. I can then "see" and "browse" across all the current website's images across all the website's folders - including file sizes, picture to name association/correlation and other useful info.. So, for example if I want to replace one image with another in my EW website I can quickly see the new image file size and name - in MS Office Picture Manager - and make the change quicker in EW than deleting and replacing the original website file. Problem: MS Picture Manager neither "shares" nor "lets go of" files nicely. It is a bit like a small child with their toys! So, over the last several months I have often wondered what has been causing EW to either "crash" unexpectedly and/or to disallow the renaming or relocation of picture files within a website. This, I have now found out, has been entirely due to MS Office Picture Manager and the way in which she handles or locks or "keeps tabs on" files in the "Picture Shortcut" list or "Folder Browser Window". If I have "browsed" pictures to change or edit or manipulate or work with in EW - by using MS Office Picture Manager - then 2 constant, replicable and annoying issues will occur - constantly: 1)... EW will constantly crash when changing pictures on a page. For example, if my "Server Specials" of the week changes and I replace various pictures of an HP-DL380G2 with an image of an HP-DL385G5 then, after a few image name and size changes, along with attendant text edits, EW will surely crash in the middle of a page edit every time - whether I've recently saved the page or not! 2)... Both EW and my O/S will exhibit "inexplicable behavior" when trying to modify, rename, move, copy or otherwise execute file operations on folders that have recently been opened and browsed in MS Office Picture Manager. This whether Picture Manager is still open or, recently closed!! Bottom Line - MS Office Picture Manager somehow "locks" files which disallows other programs to access them in free and unfettered ways. And, just to be clear, no image editing is required! Pictue Manager just has to "Browse" to the particular image's file folder!! Anyways, all this time I thought the "crashing" was an EW problem. How silly of me! Hopefully this observation will help any others - who experience EW crash issues - to look to any other graphics software - that is open at the same time - as a possible cause. Also, one final off topic observation - the existence of the FP Cleaner does not absolve MS from including a similar utility within EW. After all, the FP Cleaner is so often recommended that I can only assume that similar "simple routines" are missing from FP and EW!? Re: EW Crashing ?
Steve, I had not set PM as my default jpg editor in EW. EW was still
defaulting to Paint for gifs pngs and jpgs. Do you think this will now make a difference to my particular "File Browsing" issues 'twixt Picture Manager and EW and allow the two to share files in amicable fashion? I will try this and report back.... Thanks for asking and again, pointing the way! -- _________________________________________ What could possibly go wrong?
