Place holders for PSB files?

I use a lot of Photoshop PSB files intermixed with regular PSD files. I know
EM won't display the PSB files, but it would be very helpful to at least know
that they are there and additionally to open these files in Photoshop from EM.

Is there a way to have EM display a placeholder for PSB files, or for other
file types that EM won't render?

If not, are there any plans to implement this feature?

RE: Place holders for PSB files?

If your main goal is just to catalog Adobe PSB files, not to render, then
you can add the file extension manually in custom importers file called
custom.txt. Once PSB extension is added, EM will be able to catalog and
display a blank thumbnail for PSB. However it won't be able to render it.

1) Close Expression Media if it's already open.
2) Open custom.txt file from following location: C:\Program Files\Microsoft
Expression\Media 1.0\Plug-ins\Importers.
3) Enter "PSB" as file type and "0" as Media ID and enter a file type
description for example, "Adobe PSB Document".
Note: To make an entry valid, the text formatting is important in
custom.txt. That is, when you enter PSB extension in custom.txt, make sure
to put an extra space after the file type, before the pipe symbol, so it
should look like, "PSB |0|Adobe PSB Document". Also, put an extra blank
carriage return after this line.
4) Save and close custom.txt, Launch Expression Media.
5) Click File menu, Catalog Importers and make sure PSB extension is
available in the list.
6) Import PSB file

You can modify the custom importers, as described above, on Macintosh as
well. On Macintosh, you can find custom.txt at the following location:
Finder : Go : Applications : Right Click "Expression Media" : Click "Show
Package Contents" : Contents : Resources : English.lproj : Plug-ins :
Importers : Custom.txt

Please let me know if you have any questions.

RE: Place holders for PSB files?

Hi Ken,

I wish Expression Media could render PSB files. Unfortunately, the large
document format is proprietary to Adobe and they have not released the file
specifications for it. However, we will document this issue for further
investigation.

RE: Place holders for PSB files?

Hi Sekar.

I tried this:

On Macintosh, you can find custom.txt at the following location:
Finder : Go : Applications : Right Click "Expression Media" : Click "Show
Package Contents" : Contents : Resources : English.lproj : Plug-ins :
Importers : Custom.txt

Added: PSB|0|Photoshop Large Document

It's not working in EM2? Am I missing something?

RE: Place holders for PSB files?

Hi Michael,

The Custom catalog importers are not working in EM2 for Windows and
Macintosh. Our developers are currently investigating this issue. This
issue is scheduled to be fixed in next major update for Expression Media.

RE: Place holders for PSB files?

Hello Sekar Raju

I am jumping into this thread because I encountered the same problem with
the Catalog importer using the custom.txt.

It's time to say, that whenever EM is distributing a new release a few
things get fixed and other thing that worked well suddenly don't work well
anymore.

We have had this over and over, eg. with custom fields adding strange
characters, now the catalog importer, what next?

Adding new stuff my be a great thing to do, but keep the core-functionality
functional and available.

It appears to me that Microsoft and/or the development team simply don't
test enough instead we the customers are abused as your 'alpha-testers', this
is not nice.

Hope you will forward this to the persons in charge.
AND, yes, please make minor fixes available as Dierk Haasis requested.

We, the users, must be able to work with this software, we don't have the
time to 'play' with this application and wait another year till we get a fix
(not knowing if it's fixed).

As of today I am still with iView 3.1.3 (latest release) as it provides the
functionality I do need to work with. I'd like to migrate to EM2, but I will
not untill I find the core-functionalities to be stable.

Hope EM will improve very soon.
