How do I re-register my Word program?

The instructions for re-registering Word is not helpful for Vista. Can
someone help me?

The whole reason I need to re-register is because when I save a document in
Word and later try to open it by double clicking the document, it doesn't
open.

I can open it by right clicking on the docucment where it is saved and
choosing open with command.
