How do I type without replacing the letters?

As I'm typing when I mess up and press the backspace and then start typing
again it replaces the letters with the new letters. How do i change that?

Press INS once to toggle overtype mode to insert mode.

You need to turn off the "Typing replaces selection".

As gordo pointed out, "Typing replaces selection" is a good thing. This
options is what allows you to type over selected text.
