Outlook 2003, SP3 - AutoCorrect, Not using Word as the default Edi

After I installing SP3 on 50+ machines, AutoCorrect stopped working on all of
them when using Outlook (not Word) as your default editor. Word as the
default editor works find, however, company policy prohibits one to use Word
as the default editor.

All settings in autocorrect were checked before and after SP3 was installed.

However, AutoCorrect fails to do anything like capitalize the first word in
the sentence or correcting spelling after SP3 was installed. Before SP3 was
installed, these functions worked fine.

Deselecting all autocorrect actions, closing Outlook, reopening, reselecting
all the autocorrect functions, closing outlook, reopen outlook did not fix
the issue.

Has anyone seen this issue when NOT using Word as the default Editor? If
yes, did you fix it? If you did fix it, how did you do it?

I would hate to uninstall Office 2003, SP3 and bring it back to Office 2003,
SP2 with patches.

Yes, I've seen it and I don't know of a fix. I'm trying to get info from
contacts inside Microsoft to see if it is a known issue that was
seen/detected in their internal testing. Outside of that, I highly suggest
that anyone experiencing this problem contact Microsoft Product Support and
report the issue since it isn't on their list of known issues that was given
to the public when they released the service pack.

German version, same problem...

FYI we're using the german version of Office 2003 and have the same symptoms after SP3 was applied.

I revoked the automatic WSUS-deployment, but it's no good for the ones already affected.

BTW our users are most affected in Tasks / Calendar appointments, since one can't just switch to using Word as an editor there...

Any news on this issue? I certainly hope MS doesnt plan to keep it
this way and force users to use Word as the editor. Not good.

How do we contact Microsoft Support to ensure this issue is reported
and corrected?

RE: Outlook 2003, SP3 - AutoCorrect, Not using Word as the default Edi

Same issue here...

Our internal status, as of this post:
WSUS - Office 2003 SP3 – Declined – Time: Indefinite
RIS/Imaging – SlipStream/Office 2003 SP3 – Declined – Time: Indefinite

Our corporate computer policy directs us to use only TEXT email due to
security issues when using Word. However, it appears when you use Word as
the default email editor AutoCorrect still works. It seems really hinky that
MS would kill AutoCorrect in a txt email and do so under the banner of
"security". Why not also kill Word as an option for email editing...?

Our test groups caught these non-disclosed changes, prior to moving our
enterprise of 10,000+ boxes. We don't simply use test groups to see if all
applications/patches play nice; we use test groups to see what software
vendors are saying and NOT saying. This is a great example of MS's
think-tank "thinking" they know what is best for the "real" production world.
Full disclosure of feature changes would be nice. Anyway, moving on...

We have attempted very similar TS steps, plus - digging into the REG to
verify settings, with no success - yet. The only thing that has resolved
this issue, for us, was to UNINSTALL Office and then reinstall an Office 2003
w/SP2 package (using SMS) and then let our WSUS bring the boxes back up to
speed on the remaining patches.

Because email is so important and we are an enterprise environment; I don’t
see us making the move to Office 2003 SP3 any time soon. We were hoping MS
would pull their collective heads out of their corporate sandbox and fix this
on patch Tuesday (Oct 09) or even acknowledge this is a known issue; however,
patch Tuesday has come and gone and still no acknowledgement of yes - we did
kill that feature, for the fun of it or otherwise.

We have also seen issues with the change of .tif and .tiff ext being changed
to nothing and a couple of extensions blocked. However, these are an easy
fix with a bat file and SMS or PSExec. Some of these other issues are
resolved at:

For .tif .tiff
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/938813

For blocked extensions

Re: Outlook 2003, SP3 - AutoCorrect, Not using Word as the default Edi

I was able to get confirmation from a support person that a case was opened
and that it can be duplicated, but nothing more than that.

To contact Microsoft PSS, go to
http://support.microsoft.com/gp/assistsupport. Pick Office 2003 from the
Office Products category. I think the next screen is where you pick
country, version, and then you get to a place where you can go the e-mail
route or toll free number if in United States.

Re: Outlook 2003, SP3 - AutoCorrect, Not using Word as the default Edi

Thank you neo -

it appears that to contact micrsosoft support via that page would cost
me money. I wasn't really planning to spend any $ to advise them of
the problem. It sounds like they are aware of it, correct? Have you
heard any status on it? What happens next? I have a funny feeling that
MS will respond saying it is "by design". Ughhh. I hope not. So much
of the security things included in this SP3 takes functionality away.
I am seriously considering reinstalling Office 2003 and taking it back
up to SP2 + patches and stopping just before SP3. I wish MS had
clearly disclosed the loss of functionality included in SP3 - I would
not have installed it.

Yes, they are aware and as far as I know, MS generally doesn't charge if it
is an issue introduced by a service pack. I can double check this for you
by asking the MS person I'm supposed to be working with.

Right now I can live with using Word as my e-mail editor, so I have put
something in my calendar to follow-up on in 2 months to see if I can them
(MS) to give me an idea if they will/have addressed.

Re: Outlook 2003, SP3 - AutoCorrect, Not using Word as the default Edi

I have found the same problem. AutoCorrection has stopped in Outlook after
installing SP 3. I live in the Netherlands.

I phoned to Microsoft and they said I had done something wrong with the
installation of SP 3 and that I had to reinstall Office 2003.
So I did. Unfortunately I read these articles in this newsgroup after a lot
of work.

Re: Outlook 2003, SP3 - AutoCorrect, Not using Word as the default

What version of Office 2003 are you using? If it's Office 2003 sp3, then you
have a problem. Microsoft's answer to the problem is really bad:

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/943519

Guess will have to wait for them to sort it out.....?
