Re: Office 2003 SP3 Installation Error
Sp3 is failing to install?
Could you please provide a verbose log from the failed install for review? This will help us get to the bottom of it. Here is how to get a verbose log that you can error here. 1. Please download Sp3 to your local machine from here. https://www.microsoft.com/downloads/...displaylang=en 2. Create a folder in the c:\ named Patch. Place Office2003SP3-KB923618-FullFile-ENU.exe in that folder. 3. goto start, then run. In the run box type "cmd" (without the quotes). hit enter 4. in the black window that comes up type "cd\" (without the quotes). hit enter then type "cd patch" (without the quotes). hit enter 5. type "Office2003SP3-KB923618-FullFile-ENU.exe /c /t:c:\patch /q" (without the quotes). hit enter 6. type "msiexec /p MAINSP3.msp /l*v c:\patch\Log.txt /qb" (without the quotes). hit enter 7. It will fail or not. Either way please locate the file c:\patch\Log.txt. Open that log file. If the patch failed, search the log file for “value 3”. Post about 10 lines above and below the “value 3” in this forum. That should give us the answer why it is failing. Thanks -- Eric Palm MSFT Office Setup "PA Bear" wrote: > Forwarded to Office Update newsgroup via crosspost. > -- > ~Robear Dyer (PA Bear) > MS MVP-Windows (IE, OE, Security, Shell/User) > AumHa VSOP & Admin http://aumha.net > DTS-L http://dts-l.org/ > > tDogEast wrote: > > Try to update my installation of Office 2003 PRO. Re: Office 2003 SP3 Installation Error
You have a couple of wierd issues.
MSI (s) (08:8C) [20:27:22:311]: I/O on thread 5008 could not be cancelled. Error: 1168 This kinda sounds like a hardware issue. I/O errors typically means that the computer is having a problem reading from a device MSI (s) (08:E8) [20:27:22:312]: Product: Microsoft Office Professional Edition 2003 -- Error 1913. Setup cannot update file C:\Windows\system32\mapisvc.inf. Verify that the file exists in your system and that you have sufficient permissions to update it. This looks like a file permission error. Either way why dont we start over with a fresh uninstall/reinstall. I'd recommend that you download the windows installer clean-up utiliity KB290301. http://support.microsoft.com/kb/290301 Install it. Then run it. (You will find it in the program list) Find Office 2003 on the list and choose remove. Reboot. After the reboot. Find and delete (if present) the following reg keys and folders. Re: Office 2003 SP3 Installation Error
Eric,
I did as you suggested, uninstalled office, removed reg keys, removed/renamed folders, rebooted. Reinstalled Office Pro 2003 and got the same error message as when installing the service pack: Install fails with error 1913 - Steup cannot update file c:\windows\system32\mapisvc.inf. Verify that the file exists in your system and that you have sufficient permissions to update it. Had to cancel the install and now I had no office applications at all and could not reinstall. Decided to try and install the office applicaitons one at a time beginning with Word. - Success Installed Excel - Success Installed PowerPoint - Success Installed Publisher - Success Installed Outlook - Failed with the same error as above. Gave up on outlook. Went to Windows Update. Office 2003 SP3 Update installed successfully. Now everything is working fine, except I have no Outlook! Re: Office 2003 SP3 Installation Error
What version of windows are you using?
I am not an Outlook expert, but I do have some suggestions. Log onto the machine with an Admin account. Please locate this file. (c:\windows\system32\mapisvc.inf) Right click the file, choose properties. Click on the security tab. Click advanced Click on the Owner tab If using Vista click edit (if not using vista I think you can change that owner on this screen) Choose your account name and click ok click ok all the way out... Then right click the file again and choose properties. click the security tab. Give Everyone Full permissions. click ok all the way out. Try to install Outlook. If this doesnt work.... Try deleting that file. Then try installing Outlook. Let me know if either of these suggestions help. -- Eric Palm MSFT Office Setup "tDogEast" wrote: > Eric, > > I did as you suggested, uninstalled office, removed reg keys, > removed/renamed folders, rebooted. > Reinstalled Office Pro 2003 and got the same error message as when > installing the service pack: > > Install fails with error 1913 > - Steup cannot update file c:\windows\system32\mapisvc.inf. Re: Office 2003 SP3 Installation Error
Eric,
As I said in my original post: I verified that the file does in fact exist. I looked at the permissions, and the only user that is listed as having sufficient permissions to update/change/delete this file is the "Trusted Installer" I am logged in as an administrator, and I don't think that I can even save files in this folder (system32). I am running Vista32 Business on a Sony VAIO laptop. I will try again this evening, but I don't think that I have access to modify this file in any way for some reason. I am not a Vista expert as this is my first machine with Vista installed, but I think that there are some safeguards installed that I don't understand how to manipulate. Your help is appreciated! Re: Office 2003 SP3 Installation Error
Hi tDogEasy,
I do understand that the current owner is the "trusted installer" and you may or may not have permissions to work with that file, but that is why I am instructing you to take ownership of the file. Anytime you dont have rights to work on a file, as long as you are an admin you can take ownership of said file/folder and then you will have rights to give or take permissions on the file. Try what I suggested when you get a chance and let me know how it goes. -- Eric Palm MSFT Office Setup "tDogEast" wrote: > Eric, > > As I said in my original post: > > I verified that the file does in fact exist. Re: Office 2003 SP3 Installation Error
I also was having install issues with SP3 on vista Ultimate. Error code 779. I searched all over Vista knowledgebase, etc etc, chat rooms, newsgroups etc, and although a few posts made some sense, they were either too cumbersome for novices like me, or requried 3rd party software etc. Your solution concerning taking ownership of the mapisvc.inf file worked like a charm. Someone should send this informaiton along to the Vista groups. It is short and to the point and it works. Thanks for taking to time to help others.
