Font line spacing

I am preparing a document that requires "12 point Times New Roman with
2-point or more leading between lines." Does the standard 12 point Times New
Roman have such spacing? What is the exact line spacing on the standard
Times New Roman?

The default single line spacing (leading) for most of the standard fonts is
120% of the font size, so for 12 point type it would be 14.4 points - or 2.4
points greater than the font size. That should be appropriate, but the
requirements as you quote them are not how I would normally expect to see
the specification stated. It's unclear to me whether it's asking for at
least 2 pts between descenders & ascenders or whether it's calling for at
least 2 pts greater than the font size.

Since leading is typically expressed as either a pecentage of the font size
*or* as the resultant value in points, 2 pt leading on 12 point type would
cause the lines to severely overprint one another.

Standard line spacing is 12 points. you can use Format\paragraph and in line
spacing section choose the sapacing you need

Thank you for your reply.

I am formatting a writ for the US Supreme Court and the quote was from their
instructions. I believe they may be using "printer" laguage as opposed to
"computer" language. Their concern is the proper spacing between lines. It
appears that the standard 12-point New Times Roman is substantially the same
typeface as the sample, but the spacing between the lines on their document
is a little closer than the one I am working on.

Is their a way I can reduce the line spacing just slightly? I could not
find such.

That may be my only option. I am trying to work with that, but the changes
are way to great.

in line spacing section select exactly and type you desired point size in AT
textbox .

Gov't. huh? Figures %-)

If they're calling for "at least" 2 pts the default should be acceptable - I
would think the point they're making is that they don't want it any
*tighter* than what's used in the exemplar, but if you want to get it
tighter:

Format>. Paragraph - Indents & Spacing - Line Spacing

Select the option for Exactly (since you're calling for something less than
normal) and I'd suggest that you use nothing lower than 11.5 pts. Further,
it's best if you build this into a style rather than applying it directly.
Also, be aware of the fact that this formatting _can possibly_ impact other
aspects of the doc's behavior.
