How to change Asian layout to Latin alphabet?

I inadvertantly saved a document in English in Asian layout (don't know how).
It now shows a lot of little squares and some presumably Chinese characters
interspersed with the remnants of the Latin alphabet. Does anyone know if
there is a way to convert it back to plain English?
