Outlook-stop adding space before and after edited text in reply/fr

Why does outlook add a space before and after all existing text edited in a
reply or forward email?
How do I turn it off or stop it from doing that?

In other words, I hit reply or forward, enter cursor amongst existing text
from original email, start typing, and it will put a space before and after
every word I type. Irritating.

My Version: 2003 11.8118.8122 sp2, but it has done this on many versions.
My settings:
Tools > Options > E-mail > E-Mail Options > On Replies and Forwards
When replying to a message > Include original message text
When forwarding a message > Include original message text
Mark my comments with: OFF (nothing)
