Outlook 2003 - IMAP folder vs personal folder

I am using MS outlook 2003 and interfacing it with gmail via IMAP. I set up a new mail profile and assign to it a personal folder on my D drive. However, when I configure the default profile to use IMAP, it creates another mail folder on my C drive. I'd like all emails etc.. to be on the same personal folder loacted on my D drive which is the drive that gets backed up. The C drive is only for applications. D is for personal documents etc...

I have tried several things includeing closing outlook and then moving the pst file from C to D and then restarting outlook. When I did this, everything works except I am getting a pop up when trying to send/recieve that says "The Operation failed due to a registry or instalation problem. Restart Outlook and try again. If the problem persists, please reinstall." I still have two pst files.

Can I consolidate and just have 1 pst folder located on my D drive?

Can you please advise if what I am trying to do will work? Any help is appreciated.
