uninstall SQL 2005 Studio Express so that I can install SQL 2005 t

Hello:

I need to install the SQL Server 2005 Management Studio. I have uninstalled
SQL Server 2005 Express Edition. But, when I insert the SQL 2005 CD#2 to
install the tools, I get that wonderfull ADD_LOCAL error that I see in the
Google groups but no solution offered.

How do I "truly" get SQL 2005 Studio Express Edition uninstalled so that I
can install the SQL 2005 Management Studio?

Thanks!

Hi

What command line installation have you tried and what exactly is the error
message you get?

RE: uninstall SQL 2005 Studio Express so that I can install SQL 20

Error message follows:

A component that you have specified in the ADD_LOCAL property is already
installed. To upgrade to the existing component, refer to the template.ini
and set the UPGRADE property to the name fo the component.

I did not use a command line.

Please help!

Hi

http://msdn2.microsoft.com/en-us/lib...installscripts
descibes the command line options, I believe they can also be used with the
SQLExpress installation. The component should be SQL_Tools90. You may also
want to check out http://support.microsoft.com/default...b/909967/en-us

Thanks, John.

What do I use for "PIDKEY"? I'm doing this remotely, and I do not have the
CD or product key with me. I presume that this is the license number.

RE: uninstall SQL 2005 Studio Express so that I can install SQL 20

Actually, this didn't work anyway. I got a message saying "This installation
is not valid for this version of SQL".

Any other ideas?

I really don't want to follow that other document. It is too risky, as it
involves uninstalling an instance. All I want to do is to do with the stupid
IT guys should have done in the first place--put SQL 2005 Studio on there and
get the Express that they installed off of there.

RE: uninstall SQL 2005 Studio Express so that I can install SQL 20

Hi

What didn't work? If these commands don't work I would follow the second
document.

This should re-install the tools:
start /wait <CD or DVD Drive>\setup.exe /qb REINSTALL=SQL_Tools90
REINSTALLMODE=S

This should remove everything:
Start /wait <CD or DVD Drive>\setup.exe /qb REMOVE=All
INSTANCENAME=<InstanceName>

This will remove the instance but none of the client components:
Start /wait <CD or DVD Drive>\setup.exe /qb REMOVE=SQL_Engine
INSTANCENAME=<InstanceName>

This should only add the management tools
Start /wait <CD or DVD Drive>\setup.exe /qb ADDLOCAL=SQL_Tools90

RE: uninstall SQL 2005 Studio Express so that I can install SQL 20

Hi John!

I got it to work!!!!

Thank you!!!

Here was the deal. I did, in fact, end up following that article that you
sent to me on manually uninstalling! There is one step--above all--that did
it!

I dowloaded, installed, and ran from Start...Programs the Windows Installer
Cleanup Utility. When I did that, I chose to uninstall the SQL Server 2005
Tools Express Edition.

Then, I ran SQLRun_Tools.msi. I was not able to run this before due to that
stupid ADD_LOCAL error.

But, I got it on there and everything looks great!

Thanks, John! God bless you!
