Motorola V60 (Verizon Wireless) Wet Battery - loss of telephone directory

I am new to the forum and wish to say hello. I do have a first question that I hope someone can help me solve.
I have a Motorola V60 that I place in the back pocket of my cycling jersey when I am riding. Somehow the battery got wet. I found this out when the digital displays did not appear. I took the battery out and saw that a "red dot" appeared on the backside of the phone where the battery is attached. The phone works, but the register cannot be read. Furthermore, when I took the phone in to the nearest Verizon store, I was told tha the machine used to transcribe the telephone directory could not do so. In the meantime I purchased a new Samsung (SCH-u540) in order to at least have a phone. I am not too crazy about this phone, but for $129.00 less a $80 rebate it met the immediate need. Is there a way to retirieve the telephone directory? Is there a better phone offered through Verizon?

Many thanks, Sullykerry
