Following up my original posting (and thanks to all for responses to that), I phoned o2 support and was given the manual settings that need to be entered into Nokia's PC Suite to set the N95 up as a working modem for my laptop. Just entering "02 England" into Connect Using does not work - it's more complicated than that. :-/ It's still a bit flaky - sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't for no apparent reason - and it seems to confirm o2 are not keen to encourage this sort of usage which is odd.
