Re: All Linux Distro's Links/Online Guides/Forums!

@Dark Star:
You better edit-in Mepis and sidux if you're gonna present a 'balanced view'
list of recommended Linux distros, imo.
[Especially, since you mention Debian and Mint...not in the top-3 Debian-family
distros, imo.]

Hmm...I don't get 'crap that thread with same type of distro'. Then, why do
you list both SUSE and Redhat, since they're both RPM-based? Are you saying
I could just try Redhat, and then NOT try SUSE, or vice-versa? That would
be ridiculous (in my view).

>>I just posted guides of distro that are available easy in the internet

So, the two Debian-based ones that I happen to prefer are just as 'available
easy on the Internet' as the ones that you list.

It's just that I get the feeling that maybe your list might have been constructed
by looking at first 15 highest-hits on distrowatch (rather than on merit, or votes
from somewhere, or some other basis). And, I've learned that 'popularity
based on distro-watch' is no way at all to select a distro. Trying it is the
only realistic way to decide.

That said, I DO (now) take your point that your list's title does NOT imply
anything about your personal evaluation of their relative merits. But, I'm
just trying to suggest then, you could consider adding a couple more.

[I'll ignore the 'get over yourself' comment. I wasn't trying to pick a fight.]

Re: All Linux Distro's Links/Online Guides/Forums!

I don't see Distrowatch ratings,., Its useless.. Also thats just Hits / day which doesn't gives an idea f popularity of one distro..

I listed SUSE and Fedora because both of them are pretty much diff. if you have used them ! As far as Debian based all are same wine in different bottle .. Nothing new except nifty addons..Also I am in no mood in editing the thread anyways

Re: All Linux Distro's Links/Online Guides/Forums!

The thread title is "All Linux Distro's Links/Online Guides/Forums!". So I guess we will need to add more and more distros to the list!

Btw. I really like Mepis, but never tried sidux.

sidux is a bit different and slightly bizarre...but can grow on you.

I wouldn't call it a newbie-distro. But, it DOES have a good LiveDVD.
The basic notion is that it is based on 'Debian sid' repository (aka 'unstable'),
which they monitor closely and then have their own separate group of repos, to
fix stuff. The upshot is that you'll average probably 10 package updates per day, but
for that extra pain, you seem to get a distro that has the very latest
and greatest stuff, so you're always right next to the bleeding edge.
I run KDE 4.2 on it.

[I cut my teeth on KDE 4.x on openSUSE, because you can install both
KDE-3.x and KDE-4.x and then login to whichever.
(I hear Sabayon is same, but never tried it.)
But, I have issues with openSUSE overall, tho I can solve the issues.
Mostly, it's because their goofy lack of wifi-support puts lots of pain on newbies.
They have a LiveCD, but the odds of its wifi-support working out-of-the-box
is very low. They clearly favor 'purity of open-source' and 'hey, you'll taint
the precious kernel', over having a distro that will work, leaving newbies
hung out to dry with figuring how to install any needed 'impure blobs' such as
native-wifi-driver firmware.]

Advanced MepisLovers community members all seem to really like
sidux. If Mepis (Warren Woodford) ever failed to produce a newer version
for an intolerable length of time, I think quite a few MepisLovers would
jump ship to sidux.

[Yup, guess I'll have to say again that I'm biased (opinionated) on these
issues. Linux is all about choices and I've made mine.]

How it'll work? We'll get an option to choose desktop in the login screen?
