You may install Ubuntu after to ensure a dual boot machine, i.e. you can choose which OS to load when you start your computer.

Ubuntu support have a very good article for this:

https://help.ubuntu.com/community/WindowsDualBoot

or here is a step by step guide with screenshots.

How to dual boot Windows XP and Linux (XP installed first) -- the step-by-step guide with screenshots

Happy Tuxing!

Well, I'm a bit biased.

I've tried a lot of distros. I tend to prefer Debian-family-based distros,
and Ubuntu is one of those. [However, if you were to go that route, I'd
recommend Kubuntu (which is Ubuntu, but with a KDE deskop, instead of
Gnome).]

But, after all my sampling of distros, I gotta say that the best NEWBIE Linux
distro is MEPIS. (If you go there, grab their Mepis-8, which is rock-solid,
and is very-late-beta phase, called RC2. The previous one is Mepis-7.0,
but it is quite old in its hardware support and kernel.)

Hope this helps...

Re: new to linux

Look people curse rpm but they haven't read a bit about it.. and If you read rpm its way diverse and better than debain.. Creating package for rpm might be abit tough buts its worth it.... I have learnt creating packages for both and I know the difference...

The problem with Ubuntu is that it didn't update it current repo with.. like if you have installed Intrepid you won't get updates for applications often even if newer version are present in the channel.. While other distro like Arch , Mandriva , SUSE and Fedora do provide frequent updates.. Saving you from crashes and bug fixes

Ubuntu is good but others are even better ... I seriously didn't like the repositories of Ubuntu.. There are so much of them that one can be confused.. for every bit of update you have to add a repo.. While not the case with other distro..

Now you will say I hate Ubuntu.. No.. My current system is triple boot Arch, openSUSE and Ubuntu.. I have configured Ubuntu to max but still there are lots of problem with it..

P.s : Ubuntu is the only distro that have serious kernel vulnerabilty .. So please do viable judgment while using it.. Or update asap...

For out of the box distro get DreamLinix , Linux Mint , Sabayon 4 r2 MCE or Mandriva...

Hmmm...I really do NOT think 'reading about RPM' is gonna change anyone's
mind about package-mgmt (except maybe a programmer/package-builder).

If you ever used SUSE back maybe 2-5 years ago, you GOTTA know
how cumbersome it always was. (That said, their new 'zypper' cmd-line
interface is EXCELLENT and pretty well solves RPM's quirks for SUSE. But, I
can't say the same for Mandriva...still sux, imo.) It was during that time-frame
that I learned how much smoother DEB/apt-get/Synaptic is for package-mgmt
on any/all Debian-family distros. (I AGREE with your assessment of glitches
with Ubuntu/Kubuntu repositories, which shows that DEB-based isn't an
automatic pass. Mepis WAS based for a while on Ubuntu-repositories
way back two-release-cycles ago, but Warren saw the same problems you
did, and pulled the plug on that and now bases Mepis-7 and Mepis-8 only
on his own plus Debian's repos. So, no, all Debian-family-distros are not
the same wine from a different bottle. The quality of the wine is a direct
result of the talent of the package-builders who feed the repo.)

Again, just my opinion/experience.
