Any recommendations for a Windows XP Alternative

I use a crappy Inspiron 1100 and frankly I dislike Windows XP...it takes up too much space and I only want the stuff I WANT on my computer.
I have tried Ubuntu before accessing their forum, only to find out its not installable without work I do not wish to do. Got any recommendations for free Operating Systems that I may use?

Well, Ubuntu would be my first choice but you seems to have a problem installing it. SUSE is okay, Mandriva being another choice.

ya I am going to install SUSE once I am finished with my web browser project and multiple other projects such as a word processor which will be done...June 15th.
Then I got to take $4000 worth of software off this computer lol I love torrents

PCLinuxOS

Install it and use it.
