Re: How to create a bootable USB stick?

Sorry, habibjp, that ain't the answer. Unetbootin wants to install a linux loader on the stick, which won't work with Windows. Use Microsoft's Windows 8 Upgrade assistant. When it starts, select "Install by creating Media". This will allow you to make a DVD or a bootable USB stick. Needs to be at least 4GB. This assumes you have purchased the upgrade from Microsoft.
Go to: Microsoft Windows
click on "Get Started".

Re: How to create a bootable USB stick?

Ohhh, I thought Unetbootin could do all OSs, my bad. I have come across universal ones like that before, hence my confusion lol

Re: How to create a bootable USB stick?

My Device Names aliases

USB Pen Device Name : /dev/sdb1
DVD Mount : /media/cdrom0
USB Mount Point : /media/usb
USB File System : Win FAT32
ISO or DVD Image : Fedora / CentOS / RHEL

Try this first command to Check the USB device name.
# dmesg | less
# dmesg | egrep -i 'cd|dvd'
# fdisk -l

Now mount Fedora 12 iso image
# mount Fedora-12-x86_64-netinst.iso -o loop /media/cdrom0/
# DVD=/media/cdrom0
# ls -l $DVD

yOU WILL GET OUTPUT LIKE
total 6
dr-xr-xr-x 3 root root 2048 2009-11-09 05:37 EFI
drwxr-sr-x 3 root 499 2048 2009-11-09 05:37 images
drwxr-sr-x 2 root 499 2048 2009-11-09 05:36 isolinux

You need to use files stored in isolinux directory to create a bootable usb pen.
Now Format Your Usb using
# fdisk /dev/sdb
You have to create a partition
# USB=/media/usb
# mkdosfs /dev/sdb1

Now mount the partition
# mkdir -p /media/usb
# mount /dev/sdb1 /media/usb
# USB=/media/usb

type following commands to copy
# cp -av $DVD/isolinux/* $USB
# cd $USB
# rm isolinux.bin boot.cat TRANS.TBL
# mv isolinux.cfg syslinux.cfg

unmount usb
# umount /dev/sdb1

type following command to make it bootable
# syslinux /dev/sdb1
# mount /dev/sdb1 $USB

This also works for Windows

Re: How to create a bootable USB stick?

Or an easy way Download unetbootin

install it using terminal command $ sudo apt-get install unetbootin

its a GUI based and you can easily use it ....

UnetBootin and Universal Usb Creator can make any OS USB bootable

Sorry, friend, I thought I mentioned above that Windows 8 doesn't like a Linux bootloader. Use Microsoft's upgrade utility for this.
