Favorite Linux version

As you guys probably know, there are tons of Linux versions. I've dealt with a few of them, like Ubuntu, Mint and Debian. From all of them, Ubuntu was by far my favorite. What about you? Which one was your favorite? Any specific reason?

I am not a Linux guru, nor do I know a lot about it, but I liked Mint. No specific reason.

Re: Favorite Linux version

I am a Linux Admin. Always look for stable and secure linux OS.

Like Centos, Redhat and Freebsd for server side.

Ubuntu, Mint and Fedora for desktop.

Re: Favorite Linux version

I have used a couple of linux Distro's over the years.I have used fedora as well as Ubuntu.
but i personally favour The Mint variant of Ubuntu because it has in built codes for playing media content.

Re: Favorite Linux version

I was an Ubuntu user for a while. It was pretty nice and easy to use, but I don't know...it didn't 'caught' me. Windows remains my favorite.

Re: Favorite Linux version

I would have previously said that Ubuntu was my favorite version of Linux, but after 10, it's become too much of a user interface. I preferred it when everything was basically done in the Terminal. My favorite version now would be Mint.

Re: Favorite Linux version

I like Ubuntu, it's default theme is beautiful. However, I do not like the new Unity interface. It's kinda fiddly to use, and kind of annoys me. So I have to install Gnome and force it to use the Gnome classic theme (as Gnome 3 interface is just as bad as unity in my eyes).

But the only thing I always find with Linux, is that it takes a lot of work to keep the system maintained. Because if you don't, it will keep slowing down and crashing a lot until you do something about it. Windows is just so much more stable. And the same goes with Mac OS. They're just better built systems, more efficient.

And example of this efficiency is in the SLOC (Source Lines of Code) count of Windows 7 compared to something like Fedora. Fedora 17 has about 120,000,000 SLOC and Windows 7, which does far more than Fedora has around 70,000,000. That shows that microsofts software engineers have managed to do more with less.

Also, Windows has always had good boot screens, when Linux based operating systems have shown console logs during boot up and shutdown sequences. The latest Ubuntu and Fedora systems do have good boot screens, but they seem to stop working very fast, and then show the console log again, which does not look very appealing to me.

Re: Favorite Linux version

If you look at DistroWatch.com: Put the fun back into computing. Use Linux, BSD. you'll see that Mint is the leader by a 2:1 factor over Ubuntu. I suspect that it's mostly the UI that's killing Ubuntu, that and the software and drivers not included in it. I have Mint 14 loaded on one disk and am coming up to speed with it, slowly. IMHO, when Linux gets away from the "Desktop UI riding on a command line OS" (like Win3.1 and Win 9x) paradigm and gets integrated like Winders, it'll take off like mad. Hope it happens soon. The real problem now is that most of the "enthusiasts" like to fiddle "under the hood" so there's little incentive to totally integrate. Linux, on the average desktop, won't happen until that integration becomes a reality, and just as easy to use as Winders.

Microsoft is finding out, the hard way, that giving the user a choice of UIs leads to confusion, frustration, and angry customers. They'd be better off with two versions of Windows 8, one with the "Metro" ui and one with the standard desktop, perhaps selectable during installation.

I wonder, would W8 have been more successful if they had done that? Anyone remember MCE?
