Help accessing a folder on Xubuntu from Windows 10

I have spent most of this weekend setting up a fileserver, running Xubuntu 16.10 with SnapRAID+MergerFS. I have my array set up in SnapRAID, and I have MergerFS pooling it all to /storage. Now I'm having terrible trouble accessing /storage from Windows 10.

I have tried following the instructions in SnapRAID FAQ#Samba , https://help.ubuntu.com/lts/servergu...ileserver.html , and How to Share Files Between Windows and Linux all to no avail. I did eventually manage to get Network\\homes to show up -although it won't connect, and when I click Diagnose it say it can't find it- by attempting to follow the instructions in /etc/samba/smb.conf.

I gather that if I was running all this on GNOME Ubuntu I could simply right-click on /storage in the file manager, then Properties, then on the Folder Sharing tab and enable it with checkboxes there. Alas, I elected to use Xubuntu because it is much lighter and thus runs better on the old hardware I'm using, so I can't do that.

All I want to do is have password-protected read/write access to that one folder (/storage) from Windows over the network. A quick search suggested I am not the only one that has trouble with Samba - are there any other options? Maybe some way of using SSH? I have had no trouble accessing it via PuTTY.

Is your /storage share accessible from Xubuntu (when you try /<IPofXubuntuPC>/storage)?

No, when I type it into the File Manager address bar a little red stop sign shows up next to it. When I type it into the Firefox address bar and hit enter, I get File Not Found.

Re: Help accessing a folder on Xubuntu from Windows 10

I found out that UnRAID has a file integrity plugin (Dynamix). File integrity was the principal reason that I went with SnapRAID instead in the first place, but when the choice became spend 45 (after a 30-day trial to make sure it works) on UnRAID or carry on wrestling with Samba it wasn't a difficult decision to make...I now have UnRAID up and running, took minutes, and now it's doing a parity check on empty drives. Will start filling them tomorrow and see how it goes.

Re: Help accessing a folder on Xubuntu from Windows 10

I'm not familiar with UnRAID but wouldn't you still need Samba as the file server?

I still don't get why you are not able to access the Samba share from the Xubuntu machine itself. Clearly it is not a networking issue but a problem with Samba config.

Have you tried system-config-samba?

UnRAID is downloaded more or less as an installation, you just copy it onto a flash drive, run a batch script then pop it in your server. It boots and works. Samba, NFS, AFP and FTP are all preinstalled, and it has a nice web GUI from which you can control everything.

I thought it might be the .conf, it's long and difficult to understand, and I was trying to follow about five different guides so I probably typed something wrong :L

Anyway, that guide looks much simpler than the pages of terminal commands I was reading through! I'll give it a try when I set up the backup server
