Re: Linux Games thread..Even Penguin Passionate can play
Beyond the Red Line is a stand-alone total conversion for the award-winning Freespace 2 released by Volition and Interplay for the PC. It is based on the popular new tv-show Battlestar Galactica. No, not the one from the 70s. Beyond the Red Line is a stand-alone conversion and will not require Freespace 2. All you need for playing will be included in the download. The game is made by fans for the fans, no profit is being made from any part of the project. Home Page : Download : - Video : |

Hey, they aren't exactly games, but they're certainly entertaining.
Check out the 'Phet' physics teaching simulations. I had more fun with them than with most games. http://phet.colorado.edu/new/index.php |

Re: Linux Games thread..Even Penguin Passionate can play
A 'game' is something with a goal you can win or lose. An 'activity' is more general. But there are lots of fun 'activities' out there. And of course either of these can be fun or not. So, spending an hour trying out all the crazy filters in photoshop is certainly fun, but it's not something with a right or wrong.
At the corner of my street is a little restaurant run by an incredibly hard working immigrant family. I can't imagine running that restaurant is remotely 'fun', but it's certainly something they could win or lose at. And of course real combat isn't fun, folks. Game designers make a distinction between 'games' and 'activities'. Remember the program 'Goo'? It really wasn't that useful for anything, but it was a lot of fun. (For those who don't remember, you imported a photo, and pushed parts of it around like fingerpaint- best remembered for all the shots of politicians with stupid looks, and shots of everybody with the eyes made huge. Now, what we usually call 'games' really means 'entertainment software' - software operated because it's fun. So I'd put PHet in that category - it's fun! This despite the fact that it's original purpose was to teach physics. And of course it's actually effective as a teaching aid because it's fun, and fun because it's a cool way to learn physics. Oh, and in this category somewhere should go 'Law & Order II', I believe, because it's a Java game, and most MMORPG's, which run in browserland Some dedicated soul should turn this thread into a web page. 8c) |
