tin 1.6.2 on 4.0 release

I just installed 4.0 release from scratch on a new disk.
Then I installed a number of packages, including tin 1.6.2.
The 4.0 tin works differently from the tin on 3.9 and seems
to have a few bugs.

Has the 4.0 tin software for OpenBSD 4.0 been upgraded from
that for OpenBSD 3.9?

Thanks,
Dave Feustel

cvs log and my own memory seem to indicate this is not really the case.
news/tin has been updated (to 1.8.2!) for 4.1, though, which should fix
most problems. (-current is on 1.8.3, but that's a very minor upgrade.)

What are the bugs you are seeing with 1.6.2?

Not so much bugs as just working differently without any announcement.
so I had to just figure out by experiment what was going on
After reinstalling tin I could not initially subscribe to any groups
and when tin exited there was no .newsrc file. This turned out to
be related to a message I kept getting that tin could not enter
/home/daf/home, at which point I was offered the choice of 'use
..newsrc (default)' or quitting tin. I finally created /home/daf/home
just to see what would happen, and tin wrote a complete .newsrc
file to that directory. But not before I did a y at top level which
finally loaded the newsgroup list and allowed me to subscribe to
groups. Things are now working, but the .newsrc file used to be in
/home/daf and is now in /home/daf/home. /home/News is empty.

Huh? Whatever could have possessed tin to go rummaging in
/home/daf/home? That /home/News is empty is not a problem - so is mine.

Could you post the output of 'env' and your .tinrc? And the result of
'grep daf /etc/password'?

Looks sensible. I don't know about NNTP_AUTH_FDS, but I can't imagine
that that would cause this problem.

<snip>

That's essentially the same as mine, which worked fine on 1.6.2/4.0.

Looks sensible, too.

I really wouldn't know what else could be the problem. Could you try the
following steps:

1. Remove or move all tin-related files (~/.article*, ~/.tin,
~/.newsrc)
2. pkg_delete tin, pkg_add tin
3. Check if the problem is still there
4. Remove all tin-related files
5. Try starting tin with a minimal environment, something like
env -i "PATH=$PATH" NNTPSERVER=$NNTPSERVER SHELL=$SHELL \
LOGNAME=$LOGNAME TERM=$TERM HOME=$HOME rtin
6. Check if the problem is still there; if so, remove all tin-related
files
7. pkg_delete tin, and compile the -current version of tin (1.8.3); you
can get this from cvs and/or
, and will want
to place it in /usr/ports/mystuff/news/tin
8. If everything compiles succesfully, check if the problem is still
there; if so, remove all tin-related files
9. pkg_delete the new tin and restore your old environment
