Canon i560 printer

black print problem, other colors OK.
The black print was very faint. Replaced with generic cartridge which was
in sealed packet for 6 or 8 months at room temperature. Could cartridge be
too old?
After 8 or 10 deep cleanings print is faint and missing characters.
Any suggestions appreciated.
