Canon printer ink compatibility

I just replaced my Canon I860 printer with a Canon MP610.
It looks like the cartridges are the same, except that the ones for the new
printer have a little circuit on it with a light which indicates if is
empty. I have a good handful of cartridges left over from the old printer...
can I use them in the new one?

No, unfortunately. The MP610 requires cartridges with chips otherwise the
printer will reject the cartridges.
