Over-clocking an AMD Phenon 9950 and...
I have had this hardware configuration for quite a while now, and I haven't ever found a way to overclock on my motherboard. It's really starting to get annoying, because my motherboard configuration isn't that widely used. Does anyone know how to overclock on an Asus M3A32-MVP Deluxe? I'm not sure which BIOS revision I have, but I can get it in a minute. I think it's something like phoenix.
Also, I have an AMD Phenon 9950 64bit. I've looked it up and people say 3.0 GHz is the best for the CPU, but I want to get the max possible. Any ideas? Thanks in advance! --1mAn3rd PS: I'll be coming back soon. I've had a lot of issues with my girlfriend and such. We've been getting in a lot of fights ![]()

Re: Over-clocking an AMD Phenon 9950 and...
The board you mentioned has Delux in it.. Means plethora of OC options and huge potential to do OC.. .
1'st get an aftermarket coller like Sunbeam Core Contact Freezer , I recommended it becuase it cheap and yet surpass other fancy high brand cooler.. It cost 2000 Rs in India.. So must be near to $40.. After that OC at stock voltage and see how much you can churn out from it.. I think you can do 3ghz on stock.. Since i have a X3 I can do 2.7 on stock volt. 1.25.. You can get more than 3gzh ... Just bump the voltage solwly and try increasing thd FSB.. Since 9950 is a Black Ed. processor you can even change multiplier and do higher FSB , lowering the multi and increasing the FSB will result in better performance even if you have same speed with higher multi and lower FSB... Keep a look at temps after OC.. Put 2 fans @ Sunbeam CCF for push and pull.... After successful OC try pushing your ram.. Since you haven't mentioned ram I can't suggest OC it.. |

Anyway, I have already gotten a lot of cooling systems for it, which have been unnecessary unless I'm overclocking it, but I'm just getting ready to do so anyway. Well, what I meant was; I can't find the options anywhere in the BIOS for the multiplier and voltage etc... I just need to know which sections of the BIOS screen that they're in. I've looked all around it, but I've obviously missed something. Screen shots would be helpful, but you could walk me through it too :] Thanks in advance!

Re: Over-clocking an AMD Phenon 9950 and...
Yeah, I've checked in there...
I don't really see anything about power voltage. Sorry I can't get any screenshots. Specs: Motherboard: Asus M3A32-MVP Deluxe Operating System: Windows XP x64 Video Card: Nvidia GeForce 9600GT LAN: PCI-E Marvel Gigabit LAN Controller /w AI Net 2 Audio: ADI AD1988 8-Channel I think there may be a guide on the CD that came with the motherboard... I'll check on that again. EDIT: Okay, sorry about the minimal specs, I was out of time... And I finally found out how to view the overclocking options. ASUS apparently tries to "hide" it from you, so when you first go into your BIOS, you need to press F4 so you can see some of the hidden switches in the BIOS ![]() Well, I managed to crank 2.99GHz out of my CPU, but when I went over that, it started to overheat and restart. So I'm guessing I'll just stick with 2.99GHz for now ![]() Thanks for your help, guys ~

Re: Over-clocking an AMD Phenon 9950 and...
Yeah thought so it would be F4, Gigabyte and ECS motherboards are Shift + F4. Why didn't I tell you that in the first place?
Ohh well....gd on you for your first oc. BTW, your bios are up to the latest revision I assume? Also, when overclocking, increase the HT (for AMD) or FSB (Intel) to a point where your system doesn't boot no more, don't go in and set your voltage up and then overclock its not done that way. Once you have found a HT or FSB wall and your system 1. doesn't make it past POST or 2. passes POST but freezes or restarts or BSODS as soon as the windows logo comes up, its time to increase the voltage by little increments and change your RAM timings to either 1:1 or 3:2 or 5:4 also known as synchronous or asynchronous mode. This way you should be able to get it up higher. There are other factors like increasing Chipset and RAM voltages also to your PCI Express when you increase your HT or FSB, but I wouldn't recommend it to a newbie in this kind of stuff. Actually I don't recommend you experimenting with any voltages at all, AMD's were never designed to be overclocked as much like what Intel can do, even if you do have a FX or Black Edition AMD only recommends little 200-300 MHZ overclocks. Another thing you also need to take into account is that higher increase in speed + voltage increase = more heat output, just always keep an eye on the temperature and also make sure to stress/torture test your cpu to ensure that it is as stable as shit. So really good on you for your first overclock, need any more inquiries, help or tips...feel free to ask me. |

Re: Over-clocking an AMD Phenon 9950 and...
Yeah, my BIOS is updated to the latest revision, I made sure of that before I started doing any of this.
My BIOS also does all of the work by itself... it's kind of hard to explain. You just tell it the percentage to oc it by, and it does it. Although I'm not sure if it does it the most stable or correct way. But I definitely will remember that for the next time I try to oc, because I'm most likely going to be building an Intel chipset computer soon, and it probably won't have the percentage auto oc in it. Okay, another issue/question which I probably shouldn't make another thread for; half of my RAM isn't showing up. I have 4GB (two 2GB cards) DDR2 RAM in my card slots, and only 2GB is showing up in my BIOS and in Windows. It used to show up as 4GB. I'm running on 64 bit, so it does support 4GB, and I've already checked to make sure that both cards are pushed in all the way, everything nice and tight. I haven't run any memtest yet, mostly because I don't know what to be looking for. I don't know how to read the output. Also, I haven't taken one of the cards out to see which one is the bugged one. I'll try to do that soon. It'll just be a pain because of all of the heat-syncs that are wrapped around them. Any ideas of what could be doing this? Also, I don't think I've done anything that could have blown out one of the chips. I've been missing the 2GB for a while now, before I even started thinking about oc'ing. Thanks in advance~

Re: Over-clocking an AMD Phenon 9950 and...
You sure it doesn't interpret into something like 2x2GB ?? Usually it is like this. Otherwise I'm not really sure as to why it only shows up as 2GB in your BIOS, but really why panic when it comes up fully in Windows itself and their is no faults or crashes?

Sorry for being unclear on that ![]() I'm not panicking, I'm just kind of annoyed, because I can notice a huge difference in my boot time, compared to what it used to be. I can also notice a difference in launching a few programs.

Re: Over-clocking an AMD Phenon 9950 and...
Ohh ok....well you can always make sure both RAM modules are in their slots neatly and tightly make sure one side isn't coming out. If it still being detected as 2GB, take the modules blow off the dust on it and on the slots and then reseat them in a different order swapping them around and now see if it is still being detected as 2GB.
BTW - off topic - you have xfire right? why don't you ever go on it? Only me and Wolfie are on it from TT but your not? Whats up? |
