both have good future, java is a open source and free technology whereas .NET is a Microsoft product, if your application runs only in Windows .NET is preferable, for product to be compatible with all os, java is preferred.

well,... people around me are all talking about .NET.... .NET... and .NET... companies around me are asking for people with .NET skills...i.e. .NET programmer... moreover the craze for ASP.NET is increasing around me... i don't know if they are using it properly but they talk a lot about it... will ASP.NET going to give a tough challenge to PHP or JSP... well, i feel that open source will always reach more people coz' they are free...

well actually u see Microsoft has more of corporate customers, and many use Microsoft technologies so that is why there is an increase in .NET programmers demand. It all depends on the type of company and the product ir the client's requirement.

Re: Java or .NET :: Which one is better?

The basic difference is free(open source) and microsoft product.

Basically, both (java and .net) are used to develop web-programs , portals.
Most famous .net application i guess is orkut, which has wide-spread.

However, that doesn't mean java is not hot.
Java has potential, that .net doesnt offer.
