I was never asked to create a password during the instal, apart from the
root one that is.

I have been involved with PC's since Dos 6.22 right up to XP

So installing software is not new to me (I am 57 so no new kid on the
block thank you),

Just fancied giving Linux a go again, did try Suse1 .Years ago but did
not like it ,

I will try once more later, maybe I was not entering enough letters
or something, but knowing the rules would help

Interesting thank you

But it does give the impression that it wants an excising one,

i.e. it is asking me to enter a username and password, not create one ,
and one's I have tried always come back as incorrect, not as invalid,
Will try again later

Many thanks

If it doesn't ask you to create a user account it should.
I can't say with certainty that I've installed XP but I've
done W2K Professional quite a few times and I believe it asks
for a user account or at least gives you the opportunity to create one.

The Fedora 8 install may reject overly simple passwords and usernames
with spaces, etc.

Then you've somehow gotten an installation that operates differently
from thousands of other people. I recently installed F8 and it DID
ask me to create a username and password for my main account.

I made the switch to linux (Fedora Core 4 initially, now I'm on FC6 and
my wife if F8) about 2 years ago now and I never, ever want to go back
to any operating system from Microsoft. My experience and impression has
been that I've "been given my computer back" and provided with an
immensely powerful toolset.

If you bear with it and get through the learning curve, and I won't
bullshit you that it's not steep, you'll love it.
