No characters being echoed is normal. Redhat 7.0, not such a good idea. If you insist, boot from a CD like knoppix, mount the hard disk in read/write mode and fix /etc/passwd. You should be able to find details with Google. |

The last release of that series, 7.3, was pretty good for it's time but that time passed a long time ago. Install Fedora 7 instead. If you are light on memory then use one of the lightweight Windows managers instead of Gnome. |

Why them the user to install something that requires updating every ~18 months? Why use bleeding edge when you could have a RedHat system? Use CentOS! It is free and is the same as RedHat without the copy writes. http://www.centos.org -- Regards Robert Smile... it increases your face value! Linux User #296285 http://counter.li.org |

I suspect that this is a troll, but in case it is not, yes, that is normal. A password should be secret and typing it on the screen for all passersby to read is certainly not secret. >> anyway, is there a fix for this or should i just throw the computer Fix for what? Your lack of knowledge will not be fixed by throwing away the computer. If there is some other problem stating it here might help find an answer. And the comment below that redhat 7.0 is seriously out of date is a good one. >> away? any help would be very much appreciated. >> >> peace >> stm >Don't use RH7 it's dreadfully obsolete, unsupported, and was a mess when >it was new. After ~18 months you have a couple of choices. Upgrade to the next version of FC or reconfigure your repos to use other repos. Besides FC is good for testing the latest bleeding edge stuff but if you want stability then go with CentOS. CentOS will be supported long after the current version of FC has died. -- Regards Robert Smile... it increases your face value! Linux User #296285 http://counter.li.org |

I use both Fedora and CentOS. I use Fedora for my desktops and I sometimes use CentOS on my servers (assuming the hardware is old enough that the obsolete kernel that RH uses in RHEL isn't a problem). Linux desktops are improving at such a fast rate that CentOS always feel incredibly dated compared to Fedora. However a new release of Fedora can sometimes be pretty buggy for a few months. F7 was pretty usable right out of the shoot and it's very good now that it's mature. F8 is the buggiest release that they've done in a long time, it also looks like the most promising release in a long time but I'd recommend waiting at least another month before using it. Ubuntu would be a compromise. They are more conservative than Fedora but less so than CentOS. |
