Thumbs down DirectX 10 for VISTA ONLY

Microsoft Will Not Release DirectX 10 for Windows XP – ATI.:ranting:

Microsoft Corp., the world’s largest maker of software, will not release next-generation graphics application programming interface (API) called DirectX 10 for the currently shipping Windows XP (OS), instead, the company will keep the new API strictly for the forthcoming Windows Vista OS, despite earlier assumptions about DirectX 10 for the XP.
During a DirectX 10-related event in London, UK, Richard Huddy, ATI Technologies’ software developers relations chief, said that Microsoft’s Vista will integrate DirectX 10 and DirectX 9 APIs for different types of hardware, but the current Windows XP will not get DirectX 10 support, as suggested some rumours earlier. For end users this means that to get the most advantages of the new-generation graphics processing units (GPUs), the new OS will be required.
Both ATI Technologies and Nvidia Corp. planned to release hardware that supports DirectX 10 capabilities as early as in the second half 2006, however, if there will be no API, which unveils the features of the hardware, the companies may reconsider their plans.
Microsoft Windows Vista is expected to be available in very early 2007.
DirectX 10 API, which is also referred to as Windows Graphics Foundation 2.0, solves numerous performance-related problems, particularly, it shrinks overhead time spent by API and driver on execution. Additionally, ATI says its first DirectX 10 graphics processor – code-named R600 – will have unified shader micro-architecture, which will allow to boost performance even further compared to currently existing micro-architectures and . The performance improvements are conditioned by a special built-in arbiter processor, which will “tailor” rendering of every frame across the 64 unified shader pipelines. Such an approach, according to ATI, allows to utilize all execution engines within the chip, while in traditional architectures – where pixel shaders and vertex shaders are calculated by dedicated units – some of the arithmetic processors may stand idle waiting for others to complete their tasks.
Microsoft Corp., who develops DirectX API collaboratively with companies like ATI and Nvidia, did not comment on the news-story.

Oh my..... Only Vista to have it.... Its unfair....

This decision of Microsoft is going to depend completely on how well Vista does the business.

The major concern of Microsoft regarding Vista, is nearly 80% of corporate/business computers DO NOT meet the requirements of running Vista with full functionalities. So MS is trying it's level best to force users to upgrade. If Vista does'nt do a good business then then ..........................

Exactly.. But against piracy MS is taking another big leaps. Reports are out there that this move is solely for making pirated users mad.

LOL what leaps ?? It takes hours for crackers to crack new versions of WGA if released.

In India ? Yes, maybe. But in Europe or USA, almost 90% home users use legit versions.

But for Vista to be successful, it has to have something more than XP (not just in looks). MS has still not made it clear wether Windows FX will be included or not in Vista. Both IE7 and Windows Media Player 11 hasn't have anything much to talk about in them. Media Player Classic or VLC still outperforms WMP11 by a long margin. Firefox >> IE7.

The new UI of Vista, ... I think when themes for WindowBlinds release in it's future versions, will be a lot stable and less resource hungry that of Vista. Office 2007 ........ OpenOffice is not that bad after all.

Don't give in to the gimmick guys ..... because dx10 not being backward compatible will create whole lot of other issues other than buying Vista . Just imagine that you buy a 7900GTX card , planning to use it for atleast a year and a half , when you hear that your card won't be able to run anything made of dx10(OS , Games etc) just because dx10 is not backward compatible...... What will you do?? get another 500$ card???? Everybody's not Bill Gates not even in Europe or US , where hardware is cheaper, and MS knows that very well ....

Well .. i really didn't expect dx10 for WinXP .. rather a dx9.0d or something .... mainly because of a few reasons , mainly because Vista is supposed to be a complete vector imaged OS ... compare it to XP which is a Bitmapped one .... so it'll really require a hell load of coding to get things running right on XP with dx10 ... lol .. but unless MS completely removes Xp support .. who needs Vista ??
