Re: Windows 8 release

If I wanted to release malware, would I try to infect 92% of the computer users or just 1%?

Re: Windows 8 release

I don't know, where would the most info be?
"Linux has the lowest market share on the desktop but is leading the server market."
Server or desktop?
"Lets see, do I want that **** pic someone downloaded or do I want millions of peoples personal info that is stored on servers?"

You'd be lucky to get my full name off of my PC, let alone any other personal info that could be considered valuable.

Kinda like deciding which to rob between a piggy bank and the real bank.

Besides, there are enough MS fanboys to want to prove a point. Get crackin' fanboys!

I'd say, I'll go with servers...

Imagine all the information that you can get a hold of? Not to mention even CC numbers and other financial documents...

Plus, you could really do a lot of damage infecting servers than desktops...

Re: Windows 8 release

Ok, I'm not a 'fan' of any of the discussed platforms, Windows or Linux. Security of an OS depends a lot on the user behavior and the installed software. That said, I don't believe Windows is a vulnerable OS compared to major Linux flavors. Linux is of course more popular server side; Windows vs Linux market share is estimated to be 7% & 34%. But Server Operating systems are much more secure and harder to break. Can anybody point out any studies showing Windows servers are more vulnerable?

This is a quote from Wikipedia:

Quote:
A true comparison between Windows and Linux on the values of the inherent security of each operating system is hard to obtain. Windows runs nearly 90% of desktop computers in the consumer market, and is the main operating system of the vast majority of commercial and institutional users.[90] This makes Windows- equipped machines a larger target for malware, which is written by coders who desire to cause as much damage as possible. Furthermore, the ubiquity of Windows means that more sensitive information- credit card numbers, medical records, financial data- is likely to be found on a Windows network. Simply put, the number of malicious programs available for Windows is not always due to flaws in the security of the operating system, but can instead be attributed to the widespread use of Windows.
Please continue this discussion in the Windows Vs Linux thread.

The only reason, why there are cracks, viruses and malware on the Windows platform is because, 90% of the end users use Microsoft OS, even since the beginning of computers way back 25 years ago. Most people aren't all ready to move onto Linux or OS X platforms instantly because they have become to adapted to Microsofts OS' that its not even describable. Not to mention 70% of software and games on the market runs on the Microsoft OS platform, that basically all these developers and producers make there money off the MS platform, such as all of us posting and replying here with Internet Explorer, or Firefox on a Windows based OS. If everyone went straight to Linux or OS X in the next 5 years, and Windows was ditched, tell me then, whether or not we will still have cracks and virus' just Linux or OS X, because at the moment not much people are using these, so they therefore cannot be bothered spending precious time developing virus and trojans on a OS hardly anyone use, but cracks are available for Linux and OS X.
