My Pc hangs at the ""windows is shutting down"" screen
whenever i shut down my PC, it hangs on the Windows is shutting down screen,..
and then i have to just switch it off.. and the next time i start it.... it goes for scandisk.... what might be the possible problem..??

One possibility is if you have set Xp to delete the pagefile on shutdown, it is a common tweak, but it extends the shut down time considerably. I think this will also happen if windows is having a hard time terminating a specific program. You could try killing all the non-os programs from the task manager b4 you shutdown, if that clears up the problem then you have to figure out which program is causing the problem.

Xp and fedora 6 mostly, but I have Vista and Mac OSX-86 installed to play with.
