Exclamation Problem with Multimedia playing

Hai,
My system's os problem got solved.
But there exist a persistent problem regarding playing audio and video files irrespective of any oses.
When a os is installed newly the problem is less.
The problem is that it stops or hangs playing suddenly and tells the program performed an illegal operation and needed to close. The 2 buttons saying send error report, don't send. This is a typical message in xp. Similar problem exists in any other oses including linux(I tried many linuxes like mandriva, mandrake, fedora, redhat, debian). How often it occurs, depends on how old before I installed the os.
But many a times it played without any trouble.
This happens definitely after a small time when I pause the audio/video file.
The system many times restarted/Hangs suddenly.
The xp takes much time to boot usually.
My system configuration Intel pentium4, 3.0GHz,
ram 512MB, Hard disk 80GB,WriteMaster DVD writer
Mother Board Mercury P4VM800M7(VIA chipset) with Realtek AC'97 Audio
Can anybody tell why this problem happens. What is the remedy?

Can you explain the RAM fault reported by the memtest. I think you've told something about it in the last problem.

This type of problem has diverse sources and reasons ....
do these step by step
>Update your DirectX to the latest version available
>Download latest DivX codecs and reinstall them . K-Lite Mega Media Codec Pack will also do
>Reset your pagefile and see if increasing the amount of pagefile helps . With 512MB ram you should have atleast 1800MB of pagefile .
>Also see that the drive where you have set your pagefile has a lot of free space (atleast 2.5 GB)
>Lastly you can take out your Ram sticks and re-sit them tightly .. also check for dust accumulation while you are at it ...
>And do run some heavy benchmark softwares to determine your system stability . Specially the memtest as strider has advised above .
>Defragment all your hdd partitions and check for bad sectors if any .

Since your problems are persistent even in Linux i guess it is a hardware oriented problem (regarding your memory sticks) . If after resetting the mem. sticks the problem persists try borrowing a good am from anyone and see if anything changes ....

When I performed memtest two days ago, it gave one error after running a whole day and still it was going on. So I stopped it. It gave a memory location in ram where it found the error. So I didnot noted down that address.
And more over this problem does exist in all the other programs also like msword, pdf while reading and
It happened(halting or restart of system) even when I was opening some folders (when No other programs, files are opened also).
In the case of multimedia players it happens so even if I change the volume.
And I tried installing many codecs like DivX, Mega Codec, etc.
The problem is the same. The problem is the same with any other audio and video players also.
Can you tell me how to view, modify, reset page file...?
I suppose page file is in C drive where xp is installed. The size of xp now 30GB in which more than 28GB is free now(xp is recently installed).
Before few months I checked the status of Harddisk, it was not having any fault(but the system problem was there).
I bought the system one year back. It was behaving as the same as now from the starting. Since I was staying too far from the vendor, I could not reach him.
But when prepare in my mind to go to vendor, the system performs very well. So that I feel I may not be able to show the problem to him.
I too feel the problem originated from hardware.
But can you tell which one is the culprit?

Once I replaced mine with ram of my friend, I found the situation was too horrible in my system.
Could it be the problem that, I am not inserting the ram properly?
I will check it out and tell u...

Well if MemTest founded a fault, then it appears to be a Ram Hardware issue, i recommend Cleaning the Ram Slots with a Ear Bud dipped in After Shave Lotion, don't apply it too much and clean lightly. then reinsert the Ram until both Notches give you a 'Click' Sound and the Ram get's tight and unmovable, then run a MemTest again, if it shows a fault this time, get your Motherboard checked out.

yup exactly, and if it's a hardware issue, then checking mobo's won't help that much, just check your RAM slots, clean them retest using memtest (preferably run for more than 24 hours) and if u still see errors, get a new memory stick

If you want to avoid errors like these in the future, my advice is stay away from Brands like, Simmtronics, Hynix, Zion, Hyundai. these Doom Devices ***** up every 2 weeks, i recommend getting Kingston, I've been using it for a while now, i've pushed it's Latencies from 3-3-3-8 to 2-3-3-6 and it performs flawlessy and it comes with Lifetime Warranty

yeah i remember back in my P3 days i used to clean the golden pins on the ram sticks using a non-dust eraser ....sometimes if the ram doesn't fit into the slots tightly there is a chance of fungus growth on those connectors , specially during the rainy season or a long period of inactivity ....

brand choice is something that is associated with luck ..... i have been using zion for over two years now and that too OCed without a single problem but yeah Kingston or Transcend will be a very good and viable choice ....

It could also be the video file itself that has been corrupted, you may want to try downloading a program like virtual dub, and re-saving the file. You can get it at www.doom9.org - it is a free download

It may also be a corrupted video file, you can try re-saving it with virtual dub, use the quick re-compress settings, and it won't take too long. Here is a link you can get it from.
As far as the page file, I would recommend having 2 if you have more than one drive(drive, not partition) Put a smaller page file on your c: drive, and then a larger one on a 2ndary drive, this will really help speed up your system too, as xp takes better advantage of a page file which is on a separate drive from the system files but for some reason, it really like to have a smaller one on the c: drive as well.
