Unhappy BSOD - Step:c0000218{registry hive failure} Error

I shutdown my comp properly.didnt install any new software r hardware.but wen i restarted the next time i got this blue screen.It appeared whichever way i tried to boot(like safe mode n last known config...)The BSOD reads as follows
Step:c0000218{registry hive failure}
The registry cannot load the hive(file):
\systemroot\system32\config\SOFTWARE or its log or alternate.
Its corrupt,absent or not writable.
Beggining dump of physical memory .
Physical memory dump complete.Contact ur system admin or tech support for further assistance.

I have 2 mem cards instaled.Oftem only one mem card is detected.i tried fixin it tightly but without any physical disturbance esp after a long operating gap it fails to boot giving a long beep.after restarting several times it boots showing only one memcard(ie:in dxdiag later).IS THIS IN ANYWAY RELATED TO MY BSOD?Plz help...Any advices to prevent it in future?Thanks!

Re: BSOD

As a first step just remove the faulty memory module and try to boot. If this fails we can deal with the corrupted registry.

For the corrupted registry part u can follow this :
How to recover from a corrupted registry that prevents Windows XP from starting

One strange solution i found to the corrupted registry problem is boot in Windows XP recovery console, then just do nothing and then reboot normally and most often the registry hives are found by Windows

I dont expect any solution rather than formatting and installing again...

I tried that 3 times and every time that worked. I guess the hives were really not corrupt, just that when I start the Recovery Console, perhaps some needed files are copied to the windows installation directory or something like that. Even i don't think it's a solution, but works most of the times
