how do I get out of compatibility mode in MS Word?

I don't know what I did but suddenly I found myself in compatibility mode while typing a word document. How can I get out of this mode and into a plain, simple, word format? Even rebooting my computer won't get the word processing document into a plain, simple, word format. I can't get rid of this compatibility mode!!!
I am using MS Mac 2008 home and student edition. Thank you!

I don't know anything about Apple but I do know Windows. I'll tell you what I know in Windows and maybe it does the same thing in Apple.
If I'm working on a document in MS Office 2007 and save the document as a 2007 version, it will not say Compatibility Mode. But if I'm working in MS Office 2007 and save it as a 2003 version, it will say Compatibility Mode. My guess would be to save it as the same version you are working in and you shouldn't see the Compatibility Mode at the top. I hope this doesn't confuse you.

I've tried saving it as a 2008 docx, thinking the basic, simple word template would come back. But it hasn't. I read something on another forum that said to click on the "office" button to reset word but I don't see an "office" button on the page.

Maybe I only hope is to trash MS Word and buy another version and install it. I hope that won't have to happen; that's why I'm here.

Do you have an Office button that looks like this?

Your question is good but no. These are the buttons I see from left to right when looking at the bar: new, open, save, print, undo, redo, format, tables, columns, show, navigation, gallery, toolbox, zoom and help.

I don't know what I did but I now seem to be out the compatibility mode and into the plain, basic mode. I hope this continues!
