Came across the AVG 8.0 Security suite, which seems to include anti virus, anti spyware, spam checker, firewall, rootkit, coffee maker, kitchen sink etc. Customer insisted they wanted it installed, system 2.6 celeron, 512mb of memory, very lean startup (courtesy of hijackthis), all temp files cleaned (courtesy of crapcleaner), windows animations turned off, just the absolute necessity, the machine was as fast as it could realistically be, even with aol, the chosen provider/ Installed AVG 8.0 security suite, and it went from nice and zippy, to wading through treacle. The startup wasnt to bad, maybe an extra 20 seconds or so, internet explorer was a bit slower, but managable, however the aol browser was awful, it went from ok to dial up style speed. Not jsut the loading of the software, but the actual internet speed reduced, web browsing was like a 14.4k modem. IE7 seemed ok, if just a bit slower. I am so disapointed in a programme i have used and raved about for half a decade. Gaz |

I said that I don't want ver 8.0 if it screws up my other software. I still have AV protection with ver 7.5. I don't think ver 8.0 is going to catch anymore virii than ver. 7.5 will so there is no benefit to using ver. 8.0 for me. |

I use it to filter out spammers, googlegroups abusers, and your basic "ignore everything that has already been said in the thread, and argue only for the sake of stupidity" geniuses. As in this case, using regular expressions, I've added the following lines, since most people in the "alt.privacy" hierarchy are intelligent enough to use remailers: alt.privacy* drop user-agent:*Thunderbird* alt.privacy* drop x-complaints-to:abuse@shaw.ca You get the last word, "dave." lol! -- Ckyp |

I did a full scan, both at high and slow speeds and it detected *over* 10,000 (yes ten thousand) references to CoolWebSearch plus assorted other nasties. Yet reported *none* of them being critical. All of these were references in the registry. My up to date version of SpyBot Search and Destroy plus a couple of other scanners that I use reported nothing!!! Any thoughts on what is going on??? Doing a quick calculation - if I deleted all of these warnings (registry items) the sum total of items deleted would exceed the size of the registry. What gives?? Graham |
