OS: Windows XP Windows Server 2003 / Windows Server 2008 Windows Vista Windows 7 Linux

Microsoft to provide Virtual PC 2004 for Free

Users can download the Virtual PC 2004 Service Pack 1 software from the Microsoft Web site. The software allows users to run multiple instances of operating systems on a single computer, allowing users to test a new development environment or simply try out a new configuration without changing the underlying OS.

Microsoft's Virtual PC 2004 SP1 software requires Windows 2000 Professional SP4, Windows XP Professional or later, and Windows XP Tablet PC Edition or later.

Microsoft also announced that the upcoming Virtual PC 2007 for Windows Vista will also be free to all users.

Microsoft has not made the Apple Macintosh version of Virtual PC free. That application allows PowerPC-based Macs to run Windows or other PC-based operating systems in an emulation window. It does not work on Intel-based Macs, which can run Windows natively.]

Microsoft Virtual PC 2004 System Requirements

Here are the minimum system requirements to use Microsoft Virtual PC 2004:•Processor: Athlon®, Duron®, Celeron®, Pentium® II, Pentium III, or Pentium 4
Processor speed: 400 MHz minimum (1 GHz recommended)
RAM: (See table below)
Available disk space: (See table below)
Other: Level-2 cache and CD-ROM required
Virtual PC 2004 runs on: Windows 2000 Professional, Windows XP Professional, and Windows XP Tablet PC Edition.

Windows XP Home Edition
128 MB
2 GB
OS/2 Warp Version 4 Fix Pack 15, OS/2 Warp Convenience Pack 1, and OS/2 Warp Convenience Pack 2

To run Windows 95 as a guest OS on a Windows 2000 Pro host:
Hard disk space = 500 MB
Required RAM = 128 MB (32 MB + 96 MB)

To run both Windows 98 and Windows 2000 Pro simultaneously as guests on a Windows XP Professional host:
Hard disk space = 2.5 GB (500 MB + 2 GB)
Required RAM = 288 MB (64 MB + 96 MB + 128 MB)
Additional memory that exceeds this minimum amount generally improves performance.
