Re: LAN without Internet

I seem to remember Davnel discussing this a year or two ago. I think the easiest solution is to have two networks, then two net adapters in each computer (apart from the one not connecting to the internet). One network for internet access, the other for local file sharing.

Re: LAN without Internet

Thanks mate!
Anyway I don't have two net adapters nw. so cant proceed with what u said. Is there any other chance of disabling internet for the particular system in a network?

Re: LAN without Internet

Ok I can't guarantee that this won't also disable some local network features, but you could try the following:

(These steps are for Windows 7, they will most likely be the same for Vista or 8 however anything before Vista will be a bit different, unfortunately I am very out of touch with XP and older so I can't remember how exactly it differs)

1) Right-click on the network icon in you system tray.
2) Click "Open Network and Sharing Center"
3) In the sidebar on the left of the window that comes up, click "Change Adapter Settings"
4) Left- and then Right-click on the relevant network adapter-I assume it will be "Local Area Connection"
5) Click "Properties"
6) In the window that pops up, uncheck "Internet Protocol Version 4 (TCP/IPv4)" and if it is in the list, "Internet Protocol Version 6 (TCP/IPv6)"
7) Click "Ok"
8) A restart will probably be necessary for the changes to take effect.
9) If this has any undesired results, such as the network connection simply not working at all, you can easily rectify it by simply going back in and re-checking the "...IPv4" and "...IPv6" boxes, and restarting.

Re: LAN without Internet

Ok first things first some details of the adapter.

Is it PCI, PCIe, USB2, USB3? What speed can it tackle? Is it wifi, LAN or both? What make/model is it?

Re: LAN without Internet

Ah ok. Each computer needs it's own network connection for each network you want to connect it to. So each computer that you want to connect to the internet will need two connections, one for your online network and one for your offline network. Assuming all the computers currently have one LAN port, you'll need to get a LAN or wifi card or an external wifi dongle for each one that you want to connect to both networks. Guess I should have made this clearer before sorry, it is not exactly a cheap way to go about it but the only way that will definitely work AFAIK. The laptops of course will already (I assume) have both LAN and wifi adapters built in, so you can use LAN for one network and wifi for the other.

No worries, having spoken it for 20 years I'm painfully aware of just how complex it is.

Ok so basically the pc that you want to connect to others without internet needs only one net connection, then every computer you want it to be able to connect to, that also will be separately connected to the internet, is gonna need two net connections.

If price is an issue have a look on ebay-you'll be able to find really cheap older LAN cards on there and unless you need to transfer tens of gigs of data in minutes a 10/100 Mbit card will or even just a 10 Mbit card will do just fine, you might even be able to get a job lot of them
