How does antivirus works ?

I JUST WANT TO KNOW HOW AN ANTIVIRUS WORK .
I AM DEEPLY INTERESTED IN KNOWING THE WAY HOW IT FINDS VIRUS AND NEUTRALISE IT

From Google cache : How does an antivirus work?
basically certain signatures are stored in their database, and when a file signature matches with any pne present in it's database a threat is detected.

However may new antiviruses have heuristics engine (much complex in nature) that can detect threats even if the specific signature is not present in the antivirus database.

Updating antivirus definition files means u are updating it's database for any newer viirus signatures .

^^^^^^^^^^yes this is the way how an antivirus works.That ia why we need to update our antivirus everyday.Everyday many new virus/other threats are developed and their signature are updated by antivirus in our local system.This is why,if we don't update our antivirus,we cannot fight againt new virus.
