Leicester BT payphone SNAFU?

How do BT cash payphones, in phone boxes, work these days? Is there
much centralisation to process coin acceptance? I tried two today on
Melton Road in Leicester, they seemed to be working normally except
that neither would recognise coins. The first one swallowed the coins
without registering credit, the second passed coins straight through to
the returns hole.

Also the operator could not connect the call without the recipient
being charged £4 for a reverse charge call, even though BT now had my
money in the first case. In fact when the operator did attempt to
reverse the charges, the phone just went silent, although I later found
out she had accepted the call.

This isn't the first time I have had this problem with these boxes, so
what's going on? Anybody know of BT having problems (software bugs?) in
the Leicester area?
