What is the polite reply to a cold caller...

What is the polite reply to a cold caller who rings me at an
inconvenient time and starts babbling about my having won a special
offer to be double-glazed?

Let them babble, don't reply, hang up after they have been talking for
as long as you can stand it.

Ask them to confirm their company name.
Ask them if they are familiar with the telephone preferencing service
(TPS)& then tell them to expect a call from your lawyer.

There is no such thing as a polite reply to a cold caller.

Just hang up without saying anything, it works for me, I've never had the
same caller twice.

Nah, this is far better:

Cold callers can't understand why you would want to ask them questions -
I've used this with great success a couple of times now )

Modify the following , which was originally intended to be displayed
at your front door, as appropriate, and read it out to them :

Adjacent to our front door is a large sign declaring

"Strictly no: Hawkers, salesmen, pedlars, box-wallahs,
vagrants, mendicants, proselytisers for religion or politics,
canvassers of any description whatsoever, putative fishmongers,
meddlesome mendacious medics, vendors of animal droppings,
self-described antique dealers 'on the knock' or folk who are 'just
doing some work up the road'. If you are in any doubt, one or more of
the above probably fits you, so do not bother to knock on the door or
ring the bell -- just

BUGGER OFF, NOW!"

With grateful thanks to Paul C ****ie.

I think being rude or aggressive back is just as bad, I am sure these people
do not enjoy what they do. Instead I just lie, which is also bad but it gets
them and me off the line ASAP without any nastyness and everyone is happy.
I usually say I am moving out of the house and moving abroad. and they see
there is no point
trying to get me to do what they want.

The message <f06h9d$3gk$>

But they will have no idea what NORAD is. Someone previously suggested
asking for an authentication code, then when they say they don't have
one, "do you know where you have called?" and telling them that their
full details have been passed to security for immediate action.
