Mind you, London always was the oddity of the UK. What we all used to have
3-digit STD codes, London still had 01. The only time they were in line with
the rest of the country is when they used 0171 and 0181.

Surely before becoming 0171/0181, as 071 and 081, London was on a par
with the other big cities (021, 031, 041, 051, 061).

091 has been a "bigger oddity" than London given the old situation
for local calls to /from 091 numbers (Durham,Newcastle, Sunderland)

back to 020...

024 for Coventry seems to make London less than unique now.

I know 023 and 028 are already covering widely separated areas,
and in future 029 could easily be adapted to, but at present, AFAIK,
024 is only for Coventry.

Much of the information one receives is via the media. Whether that
is from the written word on a newspaper or website, via TV or radio.

Since the number change took place several years ago, it seems to be
mostly Londoners who don't understand the code is "020" and London-
based media (presumably with staff living anywhere *but* London) do
no good when they give the wrong information, time and again. The
Evening Standard had some daft article about "new code" when 020
3xxx numbers were first announced.

I guess Ofcom never put out any press release about 020 0xxx as
that would just make the media luvvies get their knicks in a twist, it
requiring a level of IQ far greater than their celebrity-obsessed
brains generally achieve, I suspect!

And I about the use of asterix for asterisk.

I even had to email the University of Oxford asking them to correct
their website.

Why are people so bothered so long as what they write or say is
understandable personally I am not in the least bothered , I am
convinced some people just love to find fault with anything and
anybody .

Well, in your case you aren't particularly understandable. Probably just
as well, given your somewhat strange views.

Prior to 1990 it was 01. Then there were two numbers: 071/081.

In 1995 all geographic numbers gained a 1; thus 0171/0181.

And in 1999, they re-unified under 020, albeit with an extra digit in the
local number (either a 7 or an 8).

So London was on a par from 1990 until 1999....
